Classical Greece Itinerary
Travel through Greece on this 8-day cruise and swim in the Aegean Sea. This Greece cruise begins and ends in Athens.
Embarkation at Marina Zea in Athens, between 2:00-3:00pm. Enjoy a welcome drink and meet your crew and fellow passengers. Depart via Cape Sounion to Kea. Time at leisure to explore Kea’s tiny port, Coressia after dinner. Departure in the early hours for Delos. Overnight at sea.
Begin the day with an optional morning tour to the unique archaeological site of Delos (added cost), antiquity’s most sacred island. This 5,000-year-old settlement is one of the largest outdoor museums of the world, inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list. In 1872 the French Archaeological School started with systematic excavations in Delos, which still continue today together with the Greek Archaeological School. The Delos Museum is not to be missed with its magnificent sculpts, mosaics and clay cases dating from prehistoric period up to Roman.
Later, cruise to the port of Mykonos, with a swim stop on the way. The afternoon and evening are free to enjoy the island’s cosmopolitan lifestyle. Overnight in Mykonos.
Arrive to Santorini around noon, anchoring at Fira, and see what remained after an enormous volcanic explosion that occurred some 3,600 years ago. At the height of the Minoan civilization, the volcanic explosion destroyed the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island and lead to the creation of the current geological caldera. Experience the stunning natural drama of the volcanic caldera, then choose to take an optional tour to archaeological sites and typical villages (added cost) with unique views over the Aegean Sea. Overnight sailing to Crete.
This morning, arrive at Crete’s famous and lively port of Rethymnon, which displays a blend of modernity and old time charm with its remains of Venetian and Ottoman architecture. Take an optional tour to the ancient city of Knossos (added cost) near Heraklion before a late departure for Kythira. Overnight at sea.
Begin the day with a late morning swim stop and afternoon arrival to Kythira, a lesser known island gem now fast becoming a favorite among visitors to Greece. In Ancient Greek Mythology, Kythira was considered to be the island of celestial Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Spend the evening at your leisure, visiting the picturesque main town of Chora and experience the subdued charms of this peaceful island. Overnight in Kythira.
Sail early this morning to Monemvassia, originally called Malvasia by the Frank Templars. Monemvassia is a fishing and tourist town known for its medieval fortress built on a rocky islet connected to mainland by a narrow bridge (sometimes called the Gibraltar of Eastern Mediterranean). Discover a remarkable medieval fortified town, with leisure time to explore the uniquely preserved Byzantine and Venetian architecture, and experience the beauty of the natural setting.
Depart for Nafplion in the early afternoon, with a swim stop on the way. Arrive in the early evening to Nafplion, one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. The old quarter is charming, with narrow streets and characteristic period architecture. Also, impressive medieval fortifications can be seen in the port and crowning the hills above. Overnight in Nafplion.
Begin with an optional tour to Mycenae (added cost), the powerful walled palace of Agamemnon, the Homeric Achaean king. Depart early afternoon for the island of Hydra, one of the most unspoiled and interesting Greek islands that is a preserved national monument and has retained all its 17th & 18th century charm and quaintness. Spend time at leisure to explore this picturesque port town. Depart in the late evening for Marina Zeas, Piraeus, in Athens.
After breakfast, disembark at 8:30-9:00am at Marina Zea, Piraeus, Athens, Greece, and transfer to the airport for flights home or continue your journey in Athens.
