Antiquity to Byzantium
On this 8-day Athens, Greece cruise, circumnavigate the Peloponnese Peninsula, discovering treasures such as the Amphitheater of Epidaurus, the ancient tombs at Mycenae, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the spectacular Oracle of Delphi.
Stand at the original Olympic stadium, seek the oracle of Delphi and regard Agamemnon’s Kingdom on this 8-day Greece cruise. The Antiquity of Byzantium, an ancient Greek colony, is shrouded in legend and mystery that comes alive on this 8-day cruise aboard the 49-guest Galileo motor sailor. Each day consists of optional activities that allow you to explore with a guided group or on your own, all while circumnavigating the Peloponnese Peninsula, beginning and ending in Athens, Greece.
With a perfect mix of nature, history and legend, the Antiquity of Byzantium itinerary unveils gods, warriors and the natural beauty of Greece. Discover a huge theater constructed around 300 B.C at Palaia Epidaurus; step foot in the original Olympic stadium and visit the Olympic museum; and witness waters where a fleet of Venetians defeated the Ottomans in one of the most important naval battles in history that ultimately led to the independence of Greece. Ancient glorious cities show evidence of the Lion’s Gate at Mycenae, Nestor’s Palace at Pylos and the Spartan naval base at Gythion.
Greek gods like Apollo, Hera and Zeus are represented with places like the Temple of Hera and the magnificent temple of Zeus the Philippeion in Olympia. At Delphi, see where wealth and mountainsides collide, creating the place where the ancient Greek world consulted the oracle at Delphi and thanked Apollo with treasure. View an area unlike any other—a desolate region of underground waterways, windswept landscapes and towers—at Mani, the tip of the Peloponnese. And study stalactites and stalagmites at the impressive Dirou Caves.
Every moment of this 8-day Antiquity of Byzantium cruise aboard the Galileo is a stunning combination of ancient ingenuity, picture-perfect landscapes and larger-than-life legends. Optional activities may be added on to the voyage at an additional price, or simply enjoy time in port on your own. Whichever optional activities you choose, prepare to be amazed by this Antiquity to Byzantium Peloponnese cruise.

Peloponnese Treasures: From Antiquity to Byzantium Itinerary
This 8-day Greece cruise offers the perfect mix of nature, history and legend. This cruise begins and ends in Athens, Greece.
Embarkation between 2:00-3:00pm. Enjoy a welcome drink and meet your crew and fellow passengers. Sail for Ancient Epidaurus. Evening arrival and dinner on board. Overnight in port.
This morning, explore independently or leave your ship early in the morning to drive to Ancient Epidaurus for your optional excursion (added cost). Epidaurus was known throughout the Greek world as a healing sanctuary. The sanctuary was looted by the Roman general Sulla, by pirates, and later by Goths in 395 AD and very little remains of it today. The prosperity brought by the Asclepieion enabled the residents of Epidaurus to construct civic monuments, including a huge theater (approximately 300 B.C.) renowned for its symmetry and beauty.
Lunch on ship and afternoon sailing to Nafplion. Overnight in port.
This morning, explore independently or consider a morning Nafplion & Mycenae optional excursion (added cost). After a short walking tour of Nafplion, drive through the colorful city and the beautiful countryside of Argolis towards Mycenae for an optional excursion. The importance of the city, which Homer calls “rich in gold,” begins in 1650 B.C. and ceases around 1100 B.C. with the fall of the civilization to which it gives name. Visit the remains of the ancient glorious city including the Lion’s Gate, the Palace, the so called Agamemnon Tomb and the museum.
Lunch on ship and enjoy an afternoon sailing to Monemvassia. Overnight sailing to Gythion.
Early this morning, arrive at Gythion. Choose to either explore independently, or partake in an optional excursion to Mani peninsula and Cape Tenaro, plus Dirou Caves (added cost) with their stalactites and stalagmites. Ancient Gythion was inhabited during prehistoric times and was used later by the Spartans as a port. By enlarging the natural harbor, they made Gythion their naval base. Leaving Gythion, cross the scenic Mani Peninsula to reach Diros and visit the spectacular caves, discovered around the 60s, which are perhaps among the most important natural sites of Greece. After visiting the cave, drive to nearby Areopolis for a short stroll through the town. Mani is at the tip of the Peloponnese, a distinctive area unlike any other area in Greece; a desolate region of underground lakes and rivers, windswept landscapes and towers that is strangely beautiful.
Overnight at sea to Pylos.
Pylos is a picture-perfect seaside town on the southwest corner of the Peloponnese. In 1827 a fleet of Venetians and other city states defeated an Ottoman fleet in one of the most important naval battles in history. This defeat led to the independence of Greece, which occurred in 1829.
Choose to either explore independently, or join the Pylos optional excursion (added cost). After stopping to admire the scenery, continue up the road to Nestor’s Palace. The remains of the prehistoric palace occupy a scenic hilltop setting north of Pylos. The palace at Pylos belonged to Nestor and was discovered in 1939 by the American archaeologist Carl Blegen.
Highlights of the palace include the well-preserved royal apartments and a bathtub that archaeologists have speculated belonged to the old king himself. The palace, with its central courtyard, was originally two stories high and richly decorated with frescoes. Following the visit to the remains of the palace, make the short trip to the town of Hora where a superb archaeological museum holds thousands of artifacts recovered from the site.
Overnight sail to Katakolon.
In the morning arrive in Katakolon and choose to explore independently, or opt for the Katakolon & Olympia Optional Excursion (added cost). For the excursion, disembark the ship around 7:00am in the port town of Katakolo. Travel by bus to Olympia, one of the most famous and important sites in the ancient world, revered as the birthplace of the Olympic Games. In the ancient Greek world, it was also the greatest panhellenic sanctuary for the worship of Zeus. From 1875 onward excavation work, spearheaded primarily by the German government, revealed the fantastic treasures from antiquity that sit today in the marvelous archaeological museum. The most thrilling site at Olympia is the stadium, which looks much like it did more than 2,000 years ago. Also explore the Temple of Hera, the magnificent temple of Zeus the Philippeion, lodging place for the athletes who participated in the games.
Later, visit the Olympia Museum, one of the most beautiful museums in the world. Following lunch in the town of Olympia, visit the museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity. Unlike the main archaeological museum, this building houses statuary and a host of artifacts specifically related to the ancient Olympic games. After having time at leisure, travel overland to Patras on the north coast of the peninsula to re-board the ship.
Depart for Itea in the Gulf of Corinth. Overnight at Itea.
Today, choose to explore independently or join the morning’s optional excursion is to Delphi (added cost), another revered site from the ancient world. Disembark the ship early and proceed to the ruins complex. Unlike other archaeological sites in Greece, Delphi is built on the side of a mountain. First time visitors are awed as much for the stunning natural beauty that surrounds the ruins as for the ancient buildings themselves. In its prime, Delphi was known for its wealth and reputation, attributes which grew from the site’s location as hosting the most important oracle in the classical world.
Indeed, because everything in Greece is connected to mythology, Delphi became the premier site for the worship of the god Apollo. The oracle had the ability to prophecy the future and give advice. Visitors from across the Greek world traveled here to consult with the oracle and offered thanks to Apollo in the form of treasure. Spend half the day walking around the ruins complex and visit the adjoining museum. Return to the ship.
Cross the Corinth Canal. Later in the evening, sail to Marina Zea and enjoy the captain’s farewell dinner. Overnight in Marina Zea.
After breakfast, disembark at 8:30-9:00am at Marina Zea, Piraeus, Athens.

The 157-foot, 49-guest Galileo is a classic steel-hull motorsailer cruising the Greek Isles, offering the best of the Mediterranean: sun, sea, sand and history. This stunning vessel was built with the most stringent safety regulations. First launched in 1992, she was fully rebuilt in 2007 and most recently renovated in 2016. Significant upgrades to the guest accommodations, indoor and outdoor public areas make her a delightful motorsailer for cruising the Mediterranean.
Why Sail Aboard M/S Galileo
The Galileo is one of our most popular small ships cruising the Mediterranean, and for many reasons. Although she is a motorsailer, she has the charm of a historic Mediterranean sailing vessel. She primarily cruises under power, with sails raised occasionally when weather and route allow. Being Greek-owned and operated since 1992, she brings a lot of history and a connected, authentic crew. Her itineraries focus solely on the best of the Greek Islands. At only 157 feet, she can dock right downtown in small ports that are off limits to big cruise ships. And she's small enough to visit authentic small ports like Folegandros, Paros and Syros that highlight Greece’s archeological treasures and fascinating culture. Further, her operator offsets her carbon emissions.
Consult this page for a detailed description of the small ship including deck plans and a photo gallery. Our expedition cruise experts have been aboard the Galileo firsthand. Read our Galileo cruise ship review, or let us help you compare this ship with other small cruise ships that offer small ship Mediterranean cruises and Greek Island small ship cruises.
Common Areas Aboard Galileo
During the day, life on board centers around the indoor lounge area and dining room, as well as the outdoor areas at the Main, Upper and Sun Decks. Renovated in 2016, the Main Deck lounge area with an American bar leads into a warm and elegant dining room finished with wood and carpet flooring, and beautiful soft fabrics.
The indoor lounge is air conditioned for hot days and the outdoor lounge provides excellent views, especially when under sail. Guests on Galileo very much enjoy the shaded outdoor area with an outdoor bar where they can relax enjoying the most breathtaking sea views. In the evening, guests watch the sunset and enjoy a drink under the stars.
Dining Aboard Galileo
The spacious dining room seats all passengers in a single, unassigned seating and allows for spectacular views while dining in an elegant environment. Food is served at the table or presented on the state-of-the-art hot & cold buffet, which also includes an “a la minute cooking” section. Menus are a mix of traditional Greek dishes and international fare. Expect offerings that include meat, chicken or fish, but special dietary requests can be accommodated with advance notice.
Special dining events include a captain's dinner, deckside BBQ lunch and Greek Night featuring traditional recipes like moussaka, dolma, spanakopita and souvlaki. And most cruise routes are half-board, meaning you'll dine on your own at port for half the meals.
Activities Aboard Galileo
The captain will drop anchor at secluded bays and beautiful uninhabited islands where, weather permitting, guests may enjoy swimming, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The stern's classic wooden ladder invites a dip at regular intervals. Back on the ship, board games help entertain between exciting activity stops.
The Greek crew of 16-18 ensure excellent customer service and insight. Aboard Galileo you’ll arrive early and stay late avoiding the big ship crowds. Optional tours are small and intimate with exceptional local guides. And your cruise director will customize each experience based on conditions and have access to skip the lines museums and archeological sites.
Cabins & Deck Plan Aboard Galileo
