Fully discover the 7th continent on the Antarctic Explorer cruise. This expedition offers the perfect chance to discover the best of the Antarctic Peninsula, the last continent’s most northern region. You’ll be delighted by penguins, seals and whales as they accompany you on your journey along the Antarctic coastline. Landing on the continent itself is a memorable highlight, where you’ll explore the iconic sights that make this one of the world’s most pristine, exotic and unforgettable natural environments.

There is an in-depth education program, covering all aspects of the biology, politics and history of Antarctica. Beginning and ending in Ushuaia, Argentina, your small ship cruise to Antarctica will experience the wildlife and scenic highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. This expedition is delivered at a comfortable pace, perfect for first-time polar travelers or travelers with limited time to experience Antarctica. The main Antarctic Explorer itinerary cruises over 11 days, and there is also an 11-day itinerary that begins and ends in Buenos Aires. A special 11-day Antarctic Marine Mammals itinerary follows the main route but focuses on whale migration, accompanied by special guest scientists and a research associate from the Happywhale platform. And the 12-day Antarctic Peninsula: A Rare Exploration of the Weddell Sea itinerary skips the standard western Peninsula visits to instead focus on exploring the tabular icebergs and massive Adelie penguin colonies of the Antarctic Sound.

A selection of small ships operate the itinerary: the 138-guest Ocean Explorer, the 168-guest World Voyager and the 199-guest Ultramarine. Each Antarctic Explorer departure includes up-close exploration on guided hikes, shore walks and small craft excursions. Optional activities (additional cost) include kayaking, one-time paddling excursions, camping and stand-up paddleboarding. Each Ultramarine departure offers an included 10- to 15-minute flightseeing adventure (weather permitting), with select departures offering additional helicopter-assisted activities for an added fee. Between Ultramarine’s helicopter activities and the classy ambience and unique wellness amenities of World Voyager, their departures are an excellent option among our luxury Antarctica cruises. Advanced reservations are required as space is limited. Become one of the fortunate few to have set foot on the continent of Antarctica!

Every visit to Antarctica bears witness to something new or unexpected, which means that your expedition will be unlike any other—creating a unique, personal experience.

Each day, take Zodiac excursions from the ship to explore local bays, channels and landing sites. The expedition team will take care of you at each landing, whether you are hiking the Antarctic landscape, visiting a research station or consorting with penguin colonies. Chinstrap, Adélie and gentoo penguins are found here, along with Weddell, fur, crabeater and leopard seals. Keep a lookout for curious whales, such as minkes, while on a Zodiac cruise. Each day and each landing will present a new collection of creatures to delight you and keep your camera busy. Amid the serene silence of Antarctica, noisy interludes become indelible memories, such as penguins squabbling over prized pebbles, or the boom and crack of a calving glacier.

11-Day Antarctic Marine Mammals: The World of Whales & Seals Itinerary

Buenos Aires, ArgentinaUshuaia, Fly to Buenos Aires & Depart

This 11-day Antarctic Marine Mammals cruise begins and ends in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with charter flights to and from Ushuaia. Joining this special itinerary are guest scientists from the Happywhale platform, and from the Friedlaender Lab (global authorities on the underwater behavior and ecology of marine mammals, particularly whales).

Route map of 11-day Antarctic Explorer small ship expedition, operating round-trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina, with visits to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Upon arriving in this splendid city, known for its vibrant Argentinian culture, European architecture and cosmopolitan vibe, you will independently transfer to the designated group hotel, which is included in your Charter Flight & Hotel package.

Upon arrival, be transferred from the airport to a central downtown location to have some time on your own to explore this quaint port town before making your way to the designated meeting spot near the pier, where you will be transferred to the ship for embarkation.

After a late afternoon embarkation, sail along the historic Beagle Channel, which transects the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America. Expect an air of anticipation as you depart—the next time you see land, you’ll be the remote Antarctic wilderness.

ACCOMMODATIONS World Voyager
MEALS Breakfast

Crossing the roughly 500-mile (800km) Drake is considered a rite of passage for many travelers. Traversing this legendary waterway means you’ll experience the Antarctic Convergence, where the cold, northward-flowing Antarctic waters meet the warmer, southward-flowing water of the sub-Antarctic. The mixing of cold and warm waters creates a nutrient-rich feeding ground, especially for whales and other marine mammals. Guests are encouraged to keep binoculars close at hand—and to be prepared for expedition team members to announce any whale sightings.

The team of guest scientists will be introduced early in the voyage. Ari Friedlaender, who co-developed this itinerary, and members of his team from the Friedlaender Lab, are global authorities on the underwater behavior and ecology of marine mammals, particularly whales. Guests will also meet a research associate with the Happywhale platform, which enables citizens to upload their whale photos to help identify species and, possibly, individual whales.

ACCOMMODATIONS World Voyager
MEALS Breakfast

The second day of your Drake Passage crossing is an ideal time to attend scheduled polar presentations that will enhance your Antarctic experience. It’s also an excellent opportunity to visit the Science Hub on Deck 4, an instrumental part of your voyage. Spend time on deck watching for whales, which increase in number as you approach the Peninsula—and remember to upload your whale photos to the Happywhale platform.

ACCOMMODATIONS World Voyager
MEALS Breakfast

The timing of this voyage maximizes opportunities to observe various whale species along the Antarctic Peninsula. After the ice recedes in October and November, the food chain begins to re-establish itself. Whales, seals and other marine mammals are drawn to these rich feeding grounds—especially for the krill. By February and March, these creatures, which have been intensely feeding, are satiated and relaxed, making them more easier to spot. In addition to the Zodiac and paddling excursions, plan to spend a lot of time on the outer decks and other vantage points on the ship to spot—and photograph—wildlife.

You’ll spend your days in key marine mammal habitats of the Gerlache Strait and remote inner glacial bays. Over the next 3 days, aim to explore whale hotspots such as Charlotte Bay, Portal Point, Graham Passage, Errera Channel, Cuverville Island, Andvord Bay, Fournier Bay and Dallmann Bay. Past whale sightings in these areas have included minke, humpback, fin, orca and the elusive, deep-diving Arnoux’s beaked whale.

Antarctic Marine Mammals: The World of Whales & Seals is the ship’s only itinerary during which the crew will deploy hydrophones—underwater microphones that detect and record sound below the surface. You will have opportunities—during Zodiac cruises and paddling programs—to accompany Friedlaender Lab scientists as they deploy hydrophones to monitor and study marine mammal behavior, such as the vocalizations of whales. Four scientists will accompany guests in Zodiacs, with one hydrophone shared between two groups. Speakers will enable participants to listen for and, hopefully, hear whale sounds beneath the ocean surface. Engaging with scientists who are actively collecting and collating data that can be shared in real time on the water, and, through digital visual aids, brings marine biology to life in a way that transcends the water line. This activity is also available to World Voyager guests who join the Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) program.

In addition to the citizen science programming, this itinerary will also feature the wonders of Antarctica: penguins, seals, immense glaciers, snow-capped mountains, icebergs, shore landings and the polar plunge.

ACCOMMODATIONS World Voyager
MEALS Breakfast

Rounding out your marine mammal experiences, hope to witness southern elephant seals in the rugged and fabled South Shetland Islands. Also keep your fingers crossed for sightings of fin whales. You’ll explore this geological and historic archipelago while prioritizing shore landings, which offer further opportunities for wildlife sightings.

Arriving in March allows you the rare opportunity to potentially explore key excursion sites such as Hannah Point, which is deemed a Restricted Area from early to mid-season. Massive populations of elephant seals and southern giant petrels make for awe-inspiring experiences. As with any expedition, shore landings along the coast are dependent on favorable weather.

Today is the start of the journey back across the Drake Passage. This is an excellent opportunity to spend more time engaging with the Friedlaender Lab scientists, or attend one of the scheduled polar presentations.

Ushuaia, ArgentinaUshuaia, Argentina

The 12-day Weddell Sea cruise begins and ends in Ushuaia, Argentina, and focuses entirely on the remote, ice-laden portion of the Peninsula and Antarctic Sound.

Route map of Antarctic Peninsula: Rare Exploration of the Weddell Sea cruise, round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina with visits along the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Sound.

You may arrive in Ushuaia at any time on Day 1. Many guests choose to arrive a day or two before embarkation day to explore this quaint port city at the bottom of South America, and the surrounding region. Based on the arrival  information you send in advance, a transfer from the airport to your hotel will be pre-arranged.

Embarkation will occur in the late afternoon, after which your vessel will sail down the historic Beagle Channel, transecting the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America. Expect an air of anticipation as you depart—the next time you see land, you’ll be at the world’s most southern continent.

You have many options of activities during the 500-mile (800km) Drake crossing. As you gain your sea legs, the expedition team will begin their series of presentations to help prepare you for your upcoming Zodiac and land excursions. You officially enter Antarctica when your ship crosses the Antarctic Convergence, a boundary that fluctuates around 60° south. This is also a great opportunity to meet your fellow travelers—many of whom will become friends by the voyage end.

One word best describes the Weddell Sea and Antarctic Sound: immense. That applies equally to the ice formations, penguin colonies and vast stretches of sea. In Antarctic Sound and the Weddell Sea, you will encounter massive tabular icebergs. These bergs don’t calve from tidewater glaciers but from ice shelves—and many will dwarf your ship. Some in the Weddell Sea reach the size of a football field or larger. Their smooth, tabletop-flat surfaces reflect the ocean beneath: flat seas yield flat ice. Ice shelves stretch from land into the sea.

In the northwest corner of the Weddell Sea, penguin colonies can number in the tens of thousands. For travelers seeking Adélie penguins, Antarctic Sound and the Weddell Sea offer prime viewing of this iconic species—the most southerly breeding penguin, and possibly bird, on Earth (though snow petrels, prevalent here, are also a contender for that crown). Gentoo penguins are found here too, and you’ll have chances to spot chinstraps. The legendary Snow Hill Emperor colony lies in this region; while you won’t reach it, you may encounter individual members on the ice.

The Weddell Sea is less visited than the Gerlache Strait, not for lack of beauty, but due to its ever-shifting ice. On this voyage, enjoy an extra day in this area—time enough for a true adventure into this endless wilderness, and to ensure you can fully embrace the dance with the ice. In the Weddell Sea, penguins are your priority—but ice will guide your course. Alongside towering tabular icebergs, you’ll likely encounter vast stretches of sea ice, more than on the Peninsula’s west side. Your expedition team and bridge officers will track charts and forecasts, seeking openings to navigate toward the region’s highlights, and intentionally visiting the ice edge to maximize your time in this remarkable environment.

Your route will be shaped by sea ice and weather, but every destination— whichever you visit first or last—will be exceptional, evoking words like profound, humbling and surreal. Every effort will be made to visit large Adélie penguin colonies—at Brown Bluff, Paulet Island, or Tay Head—ranging from 20,000 to several hundred thousand penguins, including gentoo. Photos and documentaries can’t match the experience of standing before tens of thousands of penguins. The sounds alone—partners calling, chicks crying for parents, wind and waves against the shore, and the distant crack of calving glaciers—create an acoustic landscape of pure wildness. Add the sight of a penguin-covered landscape, and you have an encounter that’s impossible to replicate.

The currents of Antarctic and active sounds are mesmerizing. While you’re in a Zodiac, you may observe ice—large and small—flowing through narrow straits at several kilometers per hour, a raw display of the power of water. From shore, you may glimpse or sense the ice’s movement. Your Zodiac may pass through open water, while your return ride could weave among drifting floes, crackling brash and scattered bergy bits.

The Weddell Sea is known for superb birdwatching—especially cape, snow and southern giant petrels—and the chance to spot Weddell, crabeater, or leopard seals onshore or catching rides on the drifting ice. Sightings may occur near Adélie colonies or at sites like Kinnes Cove and Active Sound. When ice opens in the Weddell Sea’s northwest, whales follow—lured by the feeding opportunities. Humpbacks and minkes are most common, with occasional killer whales. Conditions may also allow you to explore areas frequented by fin whales, and possibly southern rights.

For historians, the Weddell Sea brims with stories—from Shackleton’s legendary Endurance survival and Nordenskjöld’s gallows-humored ordeal to far older histories told by the 60-million-year-old fossils on The Naze, Vega Island and Cockburn Island. Fossils are discovered here partly because large areas remain relatively snow-free. Volcanic activity has painted these sites—as well as Brown Bluff on the Peninsula’s mainland—in rich reds, burnt oranges and chocolate browns. In a landscape dominated by white, gray and blue, these colors add a vivid layer to a region steeped in both human and ancient geological history.

This itinerary offers the best of a polar expedition—soak in the vastness of the Weddell Sea and Antarctic Sound from your ship, then get up close to stunning geological formations by Zodiac or kayak.
