Polar Regions Antarctica Cruise

Active & Wild Antarctica Air Cruise

On this 8- to 13-day Polar Expedition, reduce time on the high seas by flying one way across the Drake Passage. Polar Expeditions prioritize the experience over the itinerary, adapting daily to offer the optimal experience per weather, wildlife, tides and ice conditions.

Experience the awe-inspiring immensity of Antarctica and immerse in the unimaginable beauty of the Antarctic Peninsula, where vast glaciers tumble into the sea, penguins are dwarfed by soaring peaks, and humpback and minke whales feast on abundant krill. Early Antarctic explorers returned from their voyages to the deep south with tales of a magnificent, ice-covered land teeming with life—explore it in an active way with options for added-cost activities such as sea kayaking, scuba diving and polar snorkeling.

Highlights of each departure include seeing and hearing the bustling activity of a penguin city, chances to spot leopard seals on ice floes, Zodiac cruises in search of feeding and breaching whales and skipping one or two legs of the Drake Passage to maximize time in the White Continent. Be amazed by sea ice, humbled by icebergs, intrigued by Antarctic explorer history and amused by penguins.

Adventure- and conservation-minded expedition ships Douglas Mawson, Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle serve as floating basecamps in Antarctica. These 132- to 154-guest-average small ships feature modern technology, state-of-the-art efficiency and nimble design for active off-ship excursions. Enjoy access to an unparalleled capacity and variety of adventure gear aboard these ice-breaker polar ships.

In addition to the main Fly/Fly itinerary which operates round-trip from Punta Arenas, Chile, select departures cruise one way, either starting (Cruise/Fly) or ending (Fly/Cruise) in Ushuaia, Argentina. “Wild Antarctica” departures add time in the Weddell Sea. “Antarctic Explorer Express” departures spend less time exploring the Peninsula. Each of the three itineraries (“Antarctic Explorer” with no Weddell Sea, “Antarctic Explorer Express” with no Weddell Sea and less time along the Peninsula, and “Wild Antarctica” with Weddell Sea) vary in length and opportunities to cruise the Drake Passage at least one-way; see Rates & Dates table for specific details of each departure. Select themed departures offer a focus on elevated cuisine, science, photography, or the chance for women to travel with women only.

Days 3 - 8
Antarctic Peninsula

It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Spotting your first iceberg and taking a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth is an experience that will stay with you forever. Once you arrive, the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are yours to explore, and you have a host of choices. Because you are so far south, you will experience approximately 18-24 hours of daylight and the  days can be as busy as you wish.

Your experienced expedition team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design your voyage from day to day, choosing the best options based on the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities. Plan to generally make landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day. You will want to rug up before joining Zodiac cruises along spectacular ice cliffs or among grounded icebergs, keeping watch for whales, seals and porpoising penguins. Zodiacs will also transport you from the ship to land, where you can visit penguin rookeries, discover historic huts and explore some traveler favorite spots along the peninsula.

While ashore, aim to stretch your legs, wandering along pebbly beaches or perhaps up snow-covered ridgelines to vantage points with mountains towering overhead and ice-speckled oceans below. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do that whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar watersconditions permitting!

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, you may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits
separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. Keep an ear out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve their way from summit to sea. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of this incredible white continent.

Day 9
Disembark King George Island & Fly to Punta Arenas

As the ship approaches Frei Base on King George Island, it is time to say farewell to Antarctica and an amazing adventure before boarding the flight (approximately one hour and 45 minutes) to Punta Arenas, Chile. There is time for reflection and discussion about what you have seen and experienced. Consider becoming an ambassador for Antarctica by telling your family, friends and colleagues about your journey to this magical place, advocating for its conservation and preservation so that they might one day visit the region to experience what you have been lucky to see and do here. From the Punta Arenas airport, you will be transferred to the group hotel for an overnight stay.

Note: King George Island is located at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in the South Shetland Islands and is one of the most remote places on Earth. A clear sky with perfect visibility is required in order to take off and land safely. Apologies in advance for any delays.

The wellness center houses the sauna (with a large window, so you can still enjoy the passing scenery), and offers treatments (book with reception). Across from the wellness center you will find the gym with a range of equipment for your use. Perhaps you would like to take a dip in one of the Jacuzzis on the back deck, or enjoy a quiet moment in the library.

As part of the ship’s deck theming, educate yourself on the impressive and important conservation work these female scientists are doing across the globe, leading the way in global conservation initiatives. Your ship honors these women who work tirelessly to make the world a better place through their innovation, education and activism. If you are interested in the women who have inspired your team, the hallways of each deck will introduce you to:

Dr Sylvia Earle – Dr. Earle was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998; and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero of the Planet. Her conservation initiative, Mission Blue, is creating a global network of marine protected areas known as Hope Spots, and her new Deep Hope project aims to deliver two deep-dive submersibles to collect crucial scientific data of as-yet-unseen ocean depths.

Dr. Carden Wallace AM – Principal Scientist Emeritus at the Queensland Museum since 2014, Dr. Wallace is a preeminent Australian scientist and the first curator/director of the Museum of Tropical Queensland from 1987 to 2003. She is an expert on corals and was part of a team that discovered the mass spawning of coral in 1984. In recognition of her contribution to marine science, Dr. Wallace was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2021.

Joanna Ruxton – Joanna has the rare distinction of being hailed as ‘the person responsible for the plastic-free movement’ by Sir David Attenborough himself. She spent many years at the BBC Natural History Unit working on the first Blue Planet documentary series. Her award-winning film A Plastic Ocean, released in 2016, shows the devastating impact of plastic waste on ocean ecosystems and has helped to turn the tide against single-use plastics. In 2009, Joanna co-founded Plastic Oceans UK (now known as Ocean Generation), to inspire an inclusive global movement to restore a sustainable relationship between humanity and oceans.

Sharon Kwok – In 2013, Sharon founded the AquaMeridian Conservation & Education Foundation to promote marine education and inspire the next generation to protect and preserve ocean biodiversity. Sharon continues her advocacy as a Mission Blue and WildAid board member and Executive Director of the AquaMeridian Conservation & Education Foundation.

Bernadette Demientieff – Bernadette is a passionate mother/advocate for the rights of Alaska and the Gwich’in people in northeast Alaska and northwest Canada. As Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee, she speaks for the protection of the calving grounds of the porcupine caribou herd, known as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, against destruction from oil and gas companies.

Dr. Asha de Vos – Internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan marine biologist, ocean educator and pioneer of blue whale research in the northern Indian Ocean, Dr. Asha de Vos founded Oceanswell, Sri Lanka’s first marine conservation research and education organization. Her flagship initiative, The Sri Lankan Blue Whale Project, has led to many key research publications and informs policy on whale conservation at a local and global level. Asha’s award-winning work has been showcased by the BBC, National Geographic, The New York Times and TED, among many others, and in 2018 she was named one of the 100 most inspirational and influential women in the world by the BBC.

Hanli Prinsloo – Hanli Prinsloo is the founder and executive director of I AM WATER, an ocean conservation foundation based in Cape Town, South Africa. Dedicated to protecting oceans through human experience, I AM WATER helps children in underserved South African communities experience the ocean’s transformative beauty for the first time. A champion freediver, Hanli co-founded I AM WATER Ocean Travel with husband Peter Marshall, offering intimate wildlife encounters with the ocean’s most majestic creatures.

Day 2
Embark Ushuaia

This morning, enjoy breakfast and check out. Please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Take your cabin luggage to hotel reception, prior to, or at check-out. Your luggage will be stored and transferred directly to the port for clearance, to be placed in your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. Please keep any valuables or personal items with you throughout the day.

Those wishing to join the Lake Escondido (or other) tour, please meet in the hotel lobby at 8:45am. This tour offers an unforgettable panoramic drive through big valleys of glacial origin, evergreen and deciduous forests, waterfalls and rivers, in the vastness of the Andes Mountain Range. Leave Ushuaia city to the northeast of Tierra del Fuego, driving through peat bog valleys to reach Garibaldi Pass, only accessible by a winding road that will take you to a panoramic point. From here, have amazing panoramic views of Lake Escondido and, if weather conditions allow, of Fagnano Lake. Start your descent towards the northeast to reach Fagnano Lake’s shore where you will visit a local ranch. After appreciating the landscape, you will have the chance to enjoy the typical Fuegian Lamb barbecue. Enjoy some free time there before returning to Ushuaia for ship embarkation.

Alternatively, enjoy your day at leisure and meet at your hotel lobby at 3:45 pm to be transferred to the pier for embarkation. Once on board, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin before important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, gather on the deck to commence the adventure with spectacular views over Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego. This evening, get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of a thrilling adventure to Antarctica.

Days 3 - 4
Drake Passage

As the ship commences the Drake Passage crossing, make the most of the time getting comfortable with the motions of the sea. The expedition team prepares everyone for the first landing with important wildlife guidelines and biosecurity procedures, and they start the lecture program to enlighten guests about Antarctica’s history, wildlife and environment.

Wildlife experiences begin with watching and photographing the many seabirds, including majestic albatrosses and giant petrels following in the ship’s wake. They rise and fall skillfully, using air currents created by the ship to gain momentum. On sea days, you can enjoy the facilities on board the vessel including the gym, wellness center or relaxing in one of the observation lounges.

Nearing the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, the excitement is palpable with everyone converging on one of the observation decks, watching for the first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once the ship is below the Antarctic Convergence and is surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures. The memory of the first big iceberg sighting is unforgettable. Weather permitting, the first landing in Antarctica may be attempted by late afternoon.

Days 5 - 8
Antarctic Peninsula

It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Take a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth. The western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are ready to be explored, and there are many options. Being so far south, experience approximately 18-24 hours of daylight, enabling the days to be as busy as desired. The experienced expedition team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design the voyage from day to day, choosing the best options based on the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities.

Hope to make landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day, as planned. Dress warmly before joining Zodiac cruises along spectacular ice cliffs or among grounded icebergs, keeping watch for whales, seals and porpoising penguins. Zodiacs will also provide transport between the ship and landing sites that are host to penguin rookeries and historic huts. While ashore, aim to stretch the legs, wandering along pebbly beaches or perhaps up snow-covered ridgelines to vantage points with mountains towering overhead and ice-speckled oceans below. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do that whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar waters – conditions permitting!

Possibly enjoy ship cruises through some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or bridge for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendor. Keep an ear out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve their way from summit to sea, and take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of this incredible white continent.

Additionally, on New Scientist Departures Only:
Join the team in the lecture theatre for presentations covering a broad range of topics to suit every interest. These lectures will cover polar science, wildlife, marine biology, glaciology, paleontology, exploration, history, photography and research including specialist New Scientist talks. Regardless of the topic, they all have one thing in common: they all aim to engage, educate, entertain and turn you into an ambassador for the planet. Plus, both on board and in the Zodiacs, the expedition crew will give you introductions to, and commentary on, many of the Antarctic phenomena you are experiencing.

You will have the opportunity to participate in the unique citizen science program offered throughout the voyage. It is designed to be a hands-on, immersive and transformative experience that helps you protect the beauty of our planet. Various sampling and data collection projects will be conducted on your voyage and a citizen science coordinator will be on hand to introduce and assist you. This expedition provides a unique platform to help collect high-quality data. With extended access to these remote regions and your expedition teams equipped with scientific backgrounds, you have the potential to participate and engage in citizen science projects to provide valuable data to the global scientific community. For a greater understanding, visit the ship’s world-class Citizen Science Centre. You will be rewarded for your thirst for knowledge with one of the best views on the ship.

Itinerary Notes

Read this itinerary as a guide only; the exact route and program varies according to ice, weather conditions, wildlife encountered and the captain’s discretion. Flexibility is the key to the success of any Antarctica expedition. Visits to research stations depend on final permission.

Contingency Plan

In the unlikely event that the flight to Antarctica cannot take place on the scheduled day due to unfavorable weather conditions, a Contingency Plan, included in the cost of your expedition, will apply. The primary goal of the plan is to provide an engaging and comfortable travel experience while adapting to the weather. A change in the flight schedule can impact travel to Antarctica or the return back, and the plan includes a range of activities determined by the circumstances. Additionally, the Contingency Plan offers an opportunity to rebook should weather conditions prevent you from reaching Antarctica. Please read the full Contingency Plan and contact your Adventure Specialist for more details.

Additionally, on Wild Antarctica Departures:
Central to the story of where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, became trapped in formidable sea ice, the Weddell Sea certainly is high on the list for many polar adventurers. A small set of islands standing off to the east of the Antarctic Peninsula collectively form the Antarctic Sound–the gateway to the Weddell Sea. This region has a well-deserved reputation as being an iceberg alley where large icebergs try to escape through Antarctic Sound, often making navigation difficult. However, the rewards can be great. Fossils are a reminder of a more temperate era–gastropods, large clams and spiral-shaped ammonites, all turned to stone.

Hope to experience memorable wildlife encounters as the Weddell boasts a large Adélie penguin colony just outside of Antarctic Sound, some of which breed on the rocky slopes of a small volcanic island, where a large colony of Antarctic blue-eyed shags jostle for space with nest-building Wilson’s storm petrels. On thrilling Zodiac excursions or slicing a path through the maze of sea ice in your kayak, keep watch for chinstrap and gentoo penguins in and out of the water, as well as humpback, minke and orca whales. Your camera is sure to get a solid workout during your time in the Weddell Sea.

Antarctica and Patagonia were both fantastic, in different and unique ways...Maybe our best trip ever and we have travelled to a lot of places. Thanks to Leslie for terrific pre-trip service and communication. Best agent experience yet.

"Real Advocate For Us"

Having never worked with a booking agent before, it felt a little unusual to go through a "middle man" instead of going directly through Aurora. That said, Taylor was super responsive and helpful in answering all of our any many questions. She felt like a real advocate for us -- I wonder if we would've received the same amazing treatment if we didn't have her!

"Unbelievable"

Aurora was the best. [We most enjoyed]...the zodiac rides -- seeing wildlife and icebergs was unbelievable.
