9-Day Alaska Grand Adventure
The 9-day Alaska Grand Adventure begins in Anchorage, Alaska, travels south to the Kenai Peninsula, then north overland to Denali National Park, and ends with a southbound train ride back to Anchorage. This itinerary visits the Kenai Wildlife Refuge before Kenai Fjords NP, spends one fewer day in Kenai Fjords National Park and skips Day 1 of the 11-day itinerary, plus does not overnight at Kenai Riverside Lodge.
Meet your trip leader and fellow travelers this morning in Anchorage. Enjoy a scenic drive south along Turnagain Arm and through the Chugach National Forest to the quaint community of Cooper Landing. From a launch site on the Kenai River, gear up for a scenic raft trip into the heart of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. On this class II, casual stretch of river, you’ll be able to access stunning backcountry sights and protected wilderness areas.
Along the river during your raft trip, scan for moose, bald eagles and other bird species, and salmon. The Kenai River is famous for its salmon and, depending on the time of your visit, you may witness their incredible spawning runs. A delicious picnic lunch will be served along the river or on the shore of Skilak Lake.
Late afternoon, arrive at the boat-in only Kenai Backcountry Lodge, a unique, historic inholding. The lodge utilizes a simple but effective hydroelectric power system to provide water and electricity, reducing the need for fossil fueled power.
Appetizers and dinner welcome you in the main lodge, followed by evening activities. Relax in the outdoor gazebo or enjoy a casual stroll along an established nature path.
Spend a full day exploring the remote wilderness of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Hike a secluded trail and travel through several fascinating ecological communities, including riparian and hemlock forests.
Return to the lodge in the afternoon and simply relax at the lodge or take a hot sauna. For those brave souls, take a dip into the glacier-fed waters of Skilak Lake. Depending on the weather, options for the evening may include an exploration of the lake by sturdy touring kayak or fireside natural history presentation by one of the lodge’s guides.
Cross the lake in the morning and say farewell to the Kenai Backcountry Lodge. Enjoy a scenic drive south through the Chugach National Forest to the stunning seacoast town of Seward where you’ll board a small boat bound for Kenai Fjords National Park – home to an array of glaciers and marine wildlife including whales, Steller sea lions, sea otters, puffins and more! A half-day marine wildlife cruise will allow you to explore the rugged coastline. Enjoy lunch in front of a tidewater glacier before arriving at your exclusive lodge destination: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge.
Nestled in a protected tidal lagoon area, the Glacier Lodge offers stunning views of Pedersen Glacier and miles of pristine beachfront for exploring. This afternoon, meet your guides for a lodge orientation and settle into your private cabin. Enjoy dinner and evening presentations.
Explore the wild delights of Kenai Fjords National Park for a full day. After breakfast in the main lodge, choose from a wide array of activities, those that are best suited to your energy level and interest. Guided options include naturalist-led walks, sea kayaking, group canoe paddles and more.
In the spirit of adventure and to take advantage of tidal and weather patterns, guides will discuss specific nature outings and options with the group this morning. All activities are suitable for beginners and require no previous experience.
For those seeking a more relaxed approach, the main lodge offers ideal comfort within direct views of nature. Curious sea otters and seals frequent the lagoon, just steps from the main lodge deck. In a nearby meadow, you can sometimes glimpse bears and other wildlife from a safe distance. The onsite natural history library offers amazing resources and interesting reads—cozy up with a good book and let your worries drift out with the tide!
Upon return to the main lodge in late afternoon, share stories from your day’s adventure with other guests and join an evening natural history presentation, given by local expert guides or guest speakers.
Savor another morning in the wilds of Kenai Fjords National Park. A morning outing allows for another opportunity to kayak, canoe, hike or beach comb for a half-day before boarding the boat for the return wildlife cruise to Seward.
Tonight’s destination is the Seward Windsong Lodge, located in a spectacular glacier river valley. After dinner, enjoy an evening cordial at the Resurrection Roadhouse or stroll across the road to observe the braided river outwash or relax in your comfortable accommodations.
Begin the journey north through the scenic Chugach State Park to the mountain town of Talkeetna, the gateway to the Alaska Range. Talkeetna is rich in gold-mining history and, presently, is the starting point for many mountaineering expeditions for climbers on the Alaska Range and Denali (Mt. McKinley).
Once in Talkeetna, you’ll have the freedom to choose from several activities, including a guest favorite—flightseeing. Take to the skies on an optional flightseeing tour of Denali and its adjacent glacial canyons. Experienced pilots will share stories of how the last ice age has shaped the land. Moments later, enter a world of rugged high mountain peaks and wide glacier-filled valleys (As this is a weather dependent activity, you will also have options to flightsee during your time in Denali, with Denali Air, or other local operators).
Another casual activity to enjoy this afternoon is wandering through “downtown” Talkeetna. Tour the small-town museum, where artifacts and exhibits highlight native peoples, aviators, gold seekers and trappers from Talkeetna’s past and present. Tonight, you have the flexibility to dine with the other members of your group or enjoy a great meal on your own.
Note: For the remainder of this crafted journey, the following day-by-day itinerary sequence may be adjusted slightly for your trip to take advantage of best-available hiking trails and Denali bus tour options. Your itinerary will allow for flexibility so that you may take advantage of unique opportunities…plus a few special surprises along the way!
Though the activity sequencing may look slightly different than the below outline, your trip will include a day hike to explore the ecosystem of Denali, a sightseeing and wildlife viewing bus tour, time to enjoy the Park Visitor Center and exhibits, as well as optional activities at Tonglen Lake Lodge, such as art walks and evening bonfires.
After a hearty breakfast, lace up your most comfortable trekking shoes to prepare for an immersive nature hike as you make your way further north, en route to your charming and small-scale Denali accommodations.
Aboard a custom mini coach, travel in comfort from Talkeetna north to the eastern border of Denali National Park, where you’ll soak up information about Denali’s history, ecology and geology and then put your newfound knowledge to use during an interactive guided hike, as you explore Denali’s beautiful front country sights and sounds.
After your day of exploring Denali by foot, be welcomed to your northern home away from home at Tonglen Lake Lodge. This secluded 5-acre piece of paradise boasts incredible mountain views, lakeside solitude and authentically Alaskan crafted “hide-away” style guest cabins. In addition to rustically elegant and private guest accommodations, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a rotation of optional activities, which may include local nature walks, yoga, evening art and music events, Native Alaskan cultural presentations and more. Appetizers followed by a savory dinner in the main lodge await, this evening.
Following dinner, enjoy some free time to settle in and relax. Tonglen Lake Lodge routinely offers evening bonfires and yard games as a fun option for guests.
Today, enjoy a peaceful morning and breakfast at Tonglen Lake Lodge, followed by a new perspective of Denali—by bus.
A favorite ways to explore Denali National Park and increase the odds of seeing Alaska’s charismatic wildlife is by way of an interpretative bus tour into the park. Your bus trip will start at the Denali Visitors Center and will include awe-inspiring sights along the one restricted-access Denali Park Road. Make sure to have your camera and binoculars at the ready; there’s always the possibility to spot a majestic eagle overhead or a lumbering grizzly foraging along the road’s edge.
After your drive tour adventure, return to Tonglen Lake Lodge for dinner and unwinding.
On the last day of this active adventure, enjoy a more relaxed morning at Tonglen Lake before embarking on your voyage south to Anchorage.
After breakfast this morning, make your way to visit Alaska’s 4-legged “celebrities”—Alaskan sled dogs! You’ll be able to learn more about how sled dogs serve an important role throughout rural and remote Alaskan communities.
Next, board the historic Alaska Railroad’s first-class GoldStar cars for comfortable sightseeing en route back to Anchorage. This deluxe train trip features confirmed seating in the upper-level dome cars for enhanced wilderness and wildlife viewing as well as a private outdoor viewing deck; lunch and dinner are included with your GoldStar service, and the onboard service staff will assist you with your dining options.
You’ll arrive at the Anchorage Rail Depot at approximately 8:30pm. Taxis are located directly outside the rail terminal and are easy to access. Although transfers to the airport or local hotels are not included, some hotels include courtesy shuttle service from the rail depot to their property.

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge Review
AdventureSmith Explorations’ Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge review includes a detailed description and photo gallery. Our Alaska experts have stayed at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge firsthand. Please read our lodge review below then contact our experts to compare the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge with other adventure lodging, Alaska national park tours and Alaska land tours.
Choose the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge for a sustainable, active, wildlife- filled Alaska experience. The Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is a quintessential eco lodge with an astounding location deep in the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park. Intentionally built to blend into the surroundings when viewing from Ailik Bay; there is no dock or infrastructure, instead a landing craft style boat drops guests right on the beach and requires a 15-minute walk to the lodge while lodge staff transfers luggage from the boat to the cabins. With harmonious coexisting in mind, upon arrival, travelers are educated on proper behavior in bear country as bears are frequently seen in the region. Blending conscientious wildlife practices, sustainability and comfort, this is among the finest eco lodges in the world.
The lodge and guest cabins reside within the Native-owned, 1700-acre Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. These heritage lands, owned by Port Graham Native Corporation, represent a small portion of the ancestral homeland of the Alutiiq people that once lived along and roamed the entire coast of Southcentral Alaska. It’s also home base for numerous activities including access to the surrounding park lands and many miles of astounding and rugged coastline. From the lodge and surrounding lands, harbor seals, sea and river otters, mountain goats, black bears, bald eagles and a multitude of bird life cavort and are ever-present — often in view from cabins or the main lodge.
Common Areas at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
The central lodge is a rustic yet comfortable common space offering a wall of windows to view the lagoon and Pederson Glacier, comfortable couches, a fireplace, binoculars and games. Serving as the dining room, lounge and natural history library, the main lodge is the go-to place for gatherings. A large deck with rocking chairs and excellent views of Pederson Glacier is also available for relaxation and wildlife viewing. Note: the lodge is fully off the grid, with no TVs, cell phone service or internet connections, encouraging guests to disconnect.
Sustainability at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
This eco lodge has a gold level rating from Alaska’s ecotourism certification program, Adventure Green Alaska. This lodge was designed with specific development limitations to prevent large scale resort expansion and is intentionally built using local products and sustainable techniques when possible. The surrounding 10 acres is managed as a private reserve that limits ecological impacts. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge also supports the Kenai Fjords National Park by offering helpful information on flora and fauna and the marine ecosystem ensuring longevity of the iconic wilderness. Working with the local Native community, Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is also creating a mindful, supportive and respectful cultural program.
Dining at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge’s fine dining features freshly prepared meals and delicious recipes. A buffet breakfast serves hot and cold options, an array of fresh fruits, freshly baked muffins or scones and homemade granola. Lunchtime brings hot soups and sandwiches for guests at the lodge, while the all-day kayaking and exploring groups will pack a reusable bag lunch to bring along. Late in the afternoon cold glasses of beer and chardonnay are served with appetizers. Four-course dinners often feature fresh seafood from the area, exquisitely prepared meats and hearty side dishes and are served family style in the main lodge. These community-oriented dinners are followed by tasty homemade desserts. Regular shipments of fresh produce, meat, seafood and dairy selections allow the chef and staff to creatively accommodate guest dietary restrictions. Also, with a baker turned chef, fresh homemade bread is often served.
Activities at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
Various guided activities are available each day, providing options for a wide range of abilities and energy levels. Activities from the lodge include sea kayaking on protected waters (from short paddles to half-day trips) and light hiking (from interpretive walks to beachcombing). Hiking poles are available onsite. Kayaking options include short ventures in nearby Pedersen Lagoon to longer paddles near glaciers in Aialik Bay. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge has capable and experienced guides that lead up-close explorations of the seacoast. Please note that the longer paddling excursions are not an available option for departure day or for one-night stays. All kayaking is by double kayaks and must be guided. Voyager-style canoes also provide an excellent option for exploring Pedersen Lagoon in a relaxed yet non-motorized manner. It’s the perfect craft for great photos and low impact wildlife viewing.
Also, when departing from Seward, a stay at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge begins with a marine wildlife and glacier cruise on a high-speed catamaran through Kenai Fjords National Park. This scenic tour cruises through tidewater glaciers and often experiences sightings of orca and humpback whales, Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoises, sea otters and a variety of seabirds, including puffins.
While trails are few, opportunities do exist to explore the pristine wilderness of Kenai Fjords National Park by foot. Several miles of walking on sand and pebble beaches are found a short distance from the lodge. Naturalist led hikes and forest hikes offer space to learn about local flora and fauna as well as local history and culture in the northern extension of Alaska’s temperate rainforest. A few short trails in the Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary provide access to Pedersen Glacier and outstanding scenic views.
Accommodations at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
The lodge consists of 16 comfortably appointed guest log cabins. These guest cabins were designed to be minimally visible from the adjacent Pedersen Lagoon while still offering spectacular views from within. A network of boardwalks connects the cabins, providing a comfortable walkway for guests and protection of the environment. Each private cabin features on-demand heat and electricity as well as full bath amenities.

Choose the Kenai Riverside Lodge for its covered deck that overlooks the Kenai River. It is large enough to accommodate small group tours and the many anglers who frequent the lodge. This wilderness lodge is often the first destination AdventureSmith travelers visit on an Alaskan small group tour to the Kenai Peninsula; it serves as a perfect introduction to the wilderness lodge experience. Set on the banks of the wild, glacier-fed Kenai River, it has a backcountry feel yet features amenities like private bathrooms and heated cabins. Don’t leave without visiting the wood-fired sauna, perhaps complementing it with a splash in the frigid Kenai River.
Amenities at Kenai Riverside Lodge
Entertainment for all ages and abilities is easily found at Kenai Riverside Lodge. Self-guided nature paths wind along wooded spaces and between the lodge and cabins with interpretive signs explaining the native flora and fauna. A library, lounge and many rocking chairs offer relaxation, and the lodge is wheelchair accessible. Hours may be spent on the covered deck scoping for bald eagles or watching salmon swim by in the mesmerizing turquoise waters of the Kenai. The wood-fired sauna can be heated in an instant, and is especially delightful after a cool plunge into the Kenai River. Internet is available in common areas (not cabins) and cell phone service is generally available throughout the property.

Crew at Kenai Riverside Lodge
What really distinguishes the Kenai Riverside Lodge is the amazing staff who work there. Many return year after year and their experience pays off with excellent customer service. The lodge’s owner and operators take great care of their staff and in return the staff genuinely cares about the guests' experiences in Alaska.
Accommodations at Kenai Riverside Lodge
16 log cabins nestled in the trees surrounding the main lodge feature the rustic charm of historical Alaskan pioneer cabins. The addition of modern-day comforts like heat, electric lights, private bathrooms, comfortable bedding and Adirondack chairs on private front porches make long Alaska days under the midnight sun delightful. Cabins purposefully lack TVs, phones and internet connections so guests may experience a strong connection to the natural world, especially while relaxing on the banks of the beautiful Kenai River. Each cabin accommodates up to four people, but they are most comfortable with two guests per cabin.
The boat-in-only Kenai Backcountry Lodge offers an intimate experience of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge by accommodating only 16 to 18 guests at one time and making great efforts in off-the-grid sustainability that help preserve and protect the natural environment. Originally a 1930s hunting lodge, Kenai Backcountry Lodge is now a nature and wildlife destination from which to explore the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Rustically elegant and heated by wood stove, the lodge is a gathering place for guests from around the world.

Choose the Kenai Backcountry Lodge for its remote setting on the shore of Skilak Lake surrounded by miles of wilderness, exemplifying what a backcountry lodge should be. This truly authentic Alaskan wilderness experience is accessibly only by boat and though the lodge is ecologically managed with modern day amenities, it feels like you’re stepping back in time. In that vein, internet is not available and cell phone service is spotty throughout the property.
The staff at Kenai Backcountry Lodge is remarkable and many of them love the location so much, they return summer after summer. The guides are top notch and may offer after-dinner paddling by kayak, based on weather and lake conditions. Exploring by water is truly a highlight of any visit to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.
Sustainability at Kenai Backcountry Lodge
The strategic construction of a hydro-electric system utilizes the power of nearby Cottonwood Creek to lessen dependence on generators at Kenai Backcountry Lodge. The water from the creek moves through a series of pipes and through a turbine to eventually charge the lodge's battery bank. Following its natural path, all creek water flows into Skilak Lake. The energy stored in the battery bank runs all lights and water in the kitchen, main lodge and bathhouse as well as the lodge’s laundry facilities. The hydro-system, combined with enhanced solar panels on the property, means this deluxe wilderness lodge can operate with virtually no fossil fuel. This also means a lack of generator noise common to most other backcountry lodges.
Dining at Kenai Backcountry Lodge
Adventurous chefs return year after year and take great pride in the food they serve. All meals in the main cabin are served family style. The daily hot breakfast offers delights like blueberry pancakes, bacon, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. Lunch includes a beautiful array of sandwich fixings and sides like fresh fruit, homemade cookies and snacks available to pack a bag lunch to take on the day’s activity. Upon return, retrieve a cold soda or beers from the creek and head to the beach to take in the view. In the evening, a four-course meal is served family style in the main lodge, to be enjoyed with a glass of wine or Alaskan micro-brew beer. After dinner, relax by the bonfire, in the wood-fired sauna or take a tipple to the beach and watch the evening sky. Kenai backcountry Lodge can accommodate specific dietary needs and food allergies with advanced notice.
Activities at Kenai Backcountry Lodge
On guided hikes along the magnificent Cottonwood Trail, explore the ecosystems, identify native plants, climb to breathtaking views or take a more leisurely pace. Kayaking is available, including after-dinner, guided paddles when the weather is calm. When not outside enjoying a guided activity, make a visit to the wood-fired sauna (bring your suit and some courage to dip in the lake!). Evening bonfires and ping-pong under a canopy offer easy relaxation and camaraderie among guests. If there is something you need (such as hiking poles), just ask, as the staff strives to make your Alaska vacation the trip of a lifetime.
