Delfin I Amazon River Cruise

The 8-guest Delfin I is one of the most intimate, luxurious and active vessels from which to experience Amazon Peru. Cruise in splendid harmony through the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve on this 4- or 5-day Amazon cruise aboard the Delfin I, which boasts only 4 suites, each with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies—a truly unique Amazon small ship experience.

The rich rainforest ecosystem permeates every aspect of the vessel and operations: irapay leaves (typically seen on residential huts) form the Delfin I’s waterproof roof, lamps made from paiche fish scales adorn common areas, quality woods from the forest form the very boat and suites, and custom-made repellants and lotions made of natural jungle ingredients serve every guest. Itineraries are carefully crafted to showcase the best flora and fauna of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Highlights of all Delfin I Amazon River Cruise itineraries include added adventure options like stand-up paddleboarding and a fleet of double kayaks, swimming with pink river dolphins, piranha fishing, a night safari and a visit with a local shaman. A stop at the Amazon Research Center for Ornamental Fishes in Iquitos to view the Amazon’s vibrant aquatic life perfectly rounds out this Amazon small ship cruise.

The Delfin I offers high-water and low-water itineraries, however they are nearly identical; seasonal conditions may dictate small differences in experience. For Delfin I cruises, High-water season is January through June and Low-water season is July through December. High-water season may allow for more extensive exploration and access via water. These months are ideal for travelers who prefer to duck into otherwise isolated corners of the reserve aboard speedy boats. Low-water season may allow for more trail walks. This time of year is ideal for travelers who prefer to walk through the rainforest and discover its flora and fauna. All listed activities depend on water levels, weather and season. Travelers equipped with a sense of adventure and openness tend to enjoy their Delfin I journey in the Amazon rainforest even more.

Travel aboard the luxurious 8-guest river vessel Delfin I for comfort, panoramic windows and suites with private terraces, two with cold-water whirlpool baths. This vessel is an AdventureSmith favorite for private charter cruises due to her mix of luxury and her intimate size.

FRI-SUN - Explore the Marañon River & Tributaries

Itineraries may change due to weather or river conditions, with excursions adjusted at the ship crew’s discretion. Below is a selection of common visits. Ask your Adventure Specialist for the specific day-by-day for your departure.

Las Palmas
Explore Las Palmas, a haven for birdwatchers where the treetops come alive with color and song—macaws, toucans, and countless endemic species in a spectacular aerial ballet unique to the Amazon.

Iquitos Caño
By skiff, discover one of the most important zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Never does nature seem more bountiful than in the tropics. Watch birds, observe their special displays and listen to their songs. The area’s large trees and old palm trees favor the presence of several parrot species. This particular spot also has a great number of other birds of different species. Look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three-toed kind.

Amazon Natural Park & Shaman Ceremony
Walk along forest trails guided by your naturalists as you uncover the secrets of medicinal plants used for generations by local communities. At the end of the trail, you’ll take part in a powerful Shamana Ceremony led by Carola, a revered healer whose deep connection to the jungle spirit offers a rare glimpse into the ancestral heart of the Amazon.

Yanayacu/Yarapa River
Navigate the serene waters of the Yanayacu or Yarapa River. Glide on kayaks or paddleboards through hidden lagoons and swim near playful pink river dolphins. Low-water season season reveals the hidden Amazonian beaches—pristine stretches of sand where you’ll pause to enjoy a playful and rejuvenating mud treatment, straight from the riverbed itself.

Shiriyacu/Ayuashicayu
Set off by skiff to explore the serene waters of the Marañón River. Your journey will take you to Ayuashicayu, a prime location for birdwatching. With a bit of luck, you may spot herons, kingfishers, hawks and many other vibrant species that fill the Amazon skies with color and song.

Alternately, Nauta Caño Creek is known for squirrel and silver back tamarillo monkeys, birds, dolphins and even sloths! Skim the riverbanks for small caimans and spiders, as well as insects of all colors, shapes and sizes. Take advantage of the calm waters to fish the famous piranha and learn more about this curious fish.

Amazon Confluence
Witness the breathtaking natural phenomenon at the Confluence—the sacred union where the dark waters of the Ucayali River and lighter currents of the Marañón River merge to form the mighty Amazon River. It’s a place of power and beauty, symbolizing the endless flow and transformation of life in the rainforest.

Community Visit (Fundo Casual, Pucate, Yarapa River, Nauta Caño or San José de Paranapura)
Visit a local riverside community. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with the people of the Amazon, learn about their customs, traditions and daily life, plus gain insight into a way of life deeply rooted in harmony with nature and the jungle.

You’ll be welcomed by smiling faces and friendly people who have called the Amazon their home for generations. As you arrive by skiff, possibly pass by a typical local school where children will be delighted to greet you. Later, stop by a small handicraft market, where women from the community display and sell their incredible handmade art and crafts. As you walk around, you’ll witness daily life in the community—some may invite you to see the process of peeling and grating cassava, while others may show you the traditional tools used to process locally grown rice.
