Svalbard, Iceland & Greenland's East Coast Itinerary
On this 16-day Svalbard to Reykjavik via Greenland itinerary, enjoy a flexible itinerary. Begin with a charter flight from Oslo to embark in Longyearbyen, explore Svalbard, cross the sea via the seldom-visited isle of Jan Mayen, visit eastern Greenland and take in Iceland’s less-visited Westfjords before disembarking in Reykjavik.
Arrive in Oslo and transfer to the group hotel. This afternoon explore the charming city of Oslo on a guided tour. Visit the Fram Museum, dedicated to the wooden ship sailed by Norwegian polar explorers Nansen and Amundsen. Join your fellow travelers for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner this evening.
Depart Oslo on a charter flight and enjoy breathtaking vistas en route to Longyearbyen. Embark the ship.
Your day-by-day itinerary, in keeping with the nature of an expedition, is a thoughtfully considered framework based on decades of experience in this dynamic Arctic region. Your team takes full advantage of an experienced captain, expedition leader and naturalists—as well as technological resources. Armed with the latest satellite imagery, they’ll chart where the ice is impenetrable, and where there are leads guiding the ship to exciting discoveries. Your ship has an ice-strengthened hull and forward-searching sonar, plus agile Zodiacs and kayaks, allowing your expedition team to make forays among the icebergs. The undersea specialist deploys the ROV, bringing back imagery few, if any, have ever seen. And with unforgettable days in the ice and two photographers on board, guests have expert assistance to get their best photos ever.
Begin in Svalbard, Norway, a place of deep fjords, snowcapped mountains and massive ice sheets. Svalbard is one of the best places on the planet to see polar bears in their natural habitat—the sea ice. Venture to the foot of vast tidewater glaciers, kayak among sparkling icebergs, hike the tundra and explore fjords that split the coastline. Svalbard’s wonders are a prelude to days ahead of discoveries on unknown shores, following the ice’s edge. Be on deck as your captain navigates between icebergs that drift from the calving glaciers. With a course set west, Jan Mayen is on the itinerary—an isolated volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean. Here, you’ll discover the island’s unique geology and black sand beaches and learn of the interesting history of Jan Mayen’s past inhabitants. If the ice yields, the ship will aim for Scoresbysund on the east coast of Greenland, the longest fjord system in the world. If the ice is unrelenting, the ship will head to Iceland.
The finale of your journey is the west coast of Iceland: Ísafjarðardjúp, a microcosm of life in the Westfjords with islands and wildlife around every corner including Vigur Island, home to a centuries-old tradition of eider farming.
Disembark in Reykjavík and take a morning excursion. After lunch, transfer to the airport for flights home.

The National Geographic Endurance, identical sister ship to the National Geographic Resolution, is a 126-guest innovative polar expedition ship sailing in Antarctica and the Arctic. The ship’s motto is “To Explore and Understand the World” and was named after the great explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ship, The Endurance. This educational polar vessel has a specifically designed hull to break through the tough pack ice, increasing the ability to explore these hard-to-reach destinations and making new expeditions possible. Her polar ice class 5 rating allows her to operate during any time of the year in polar environments, vastly expanding the range of exploration in Antarctica and the Arctic. National Geographic Endurance Design & Sustainability
Designed and built by the Norwegian ship builders Ulstein Group, this ship is pioneering a new age of polar travel conceived with sustainability, efficiency, safety and stability in mind. The Ulstein’s innovative, signature bow—the X-BOW®—creates a faster, safer, more efficient and comfortable vessel and incorporates sustainability solutions to reduce the ship’s environmental impact.
This hull design also allows for excellent forward and straight-down viewing, combining perfectly with her multiple observation decks, including observation wings that extend out from the sides of the ship. Her larger volume displacement in the foreship, inverted bow and slender hull lines offer higher fuel efficiency, less loss of speed in waves, more stability in rough waters, softer entry into waves, low acceleration levels, less spray, less slamming and bow impact, and reduced vibration. Her zero-steam stabilizers create a more stable ship while anchored/not moving, and her expanded fuel and water tanks allow for longer expeditions to go farther afield.
