Calipso Galapagos Cruises
On a Calipso Galapagos cruise, choose either a dedicated dive departure for a liveaboard trip, or a naturalist cruise departure for a classic Galapagos itinerary.
The 16-guest Calipso yacht cruises the Galapagos Islands with bright and breezy spaces and a sundeck Jacuzzi, on 4-, 5- or 8-day itineraries. Choose between two 8-day cruises: a dive-focused itinerary or a classic naturalist cruise itinerary. Travelers short on time can consider the abbreviated 4- or 5-day itineraries which are each a smaller portion of the full 8-day naturalist cruise. And those wanting the complete experience—naturalist cruise AND liveaboard dive cruise—can have it all by combining back-to-back itineraries.
The 8-day Naturalist Cruise operates round-trip from San Cristobal and visits Bartolome, Santiago, Chinese Hat, Fernandina, Isabela, North Seymour, South Plaza, Floreana, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz islands. The 5-day Naturalist Cruise offers the first 5 days of the 8-day itinerary, and the 4-day Naturalist Cruise features the final 4 days of the 8-day itinerary. Each Naturalist itinerary invites travelers to experience the enchanted archipelago’s classic visitor sites through snorkeling, nature walks and panga rides.
The 8-day Dive Cruise operates round-trip from San Cristobal and aims to visit Lobos, Santa Cruz, Baltra, Wolf, Darwin, Isabela, Fernandina and Santiago islands. Galapagos is considered the best pelagic diving on the planet as it includes the infamous islands of Darwin and Wolf, in the world’s largest shark biomass of 12.4 tons per hectare (2.47 acres). But with strong currents, this region’s dive sites are only accessible to experienced divers with the proper qualifications (inquire for details).
The range of itinerary options offered by Calipso ensures there is something for every style of Galapagos traveler. However, you can set your own agenda by booking this dive-equipped yacht as one of our private Galapagos yacht charters for your group of 16 or fewer.

8-Day Dive Itinerary
Each 8-day Dive Calipso Galapagos cruise operates round-trip from San Cristobal and offers approximately 17 advanced dives and 1 full-day land excursion. Visit Lobos, Santa Cruz, Baltra, Wolf, Darwin, Isabela, Fernandina and Santiago islands.
Take a morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to San Cristobal, where you will pass through immigration and baggage claim. Be transferred to the yacht and have time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing.
After lunch, everyone has an equipment check and a one-on-one with the guide for details on your diving experience. This will follow by a safety briefing and emergency drill procedures with the yacht crew. Check dive will be at Lobos island where you may see white-tip sharks, sea turtles, rays and schools of reef fish. In the evening you will have the welcome cocktail and presentation of the boat’s crew followed by your first dinner on board.
This morning visit Carrion Point. Carrion Point creates a sheltered lagoon with beautiful, turquoise water. During this visit you can snorkel and see a variety of fish, rays and perhaps the harmless white-tip reef sharks. The point is on the north coast of Santa Cruz Island at the entrance of Channel of Itabaca.
This afternoon you will have a check dive at Baltra NE where you will have ideal conditions to feel comfortable with the equipment and get ready for diving in the Wolf and Darwin areas. You may see some white-tip sharks, Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, schools of reef fish, rays, eels and barracudas.
Diving begins early to get in all 4 dives in a 12-hour day, including an optional night dive to see garden eels and the red-lipped batfish on a sandy bottom.
Wolf is one of the reasons Galapagos is on the bucket list of most divers. Scientists have designated Wolf and Darwin (together as they are so close in proximity) as the most shark-dense place on earth because they have the largest biomass of sharks on the planet, 17.5 tons of sharks per hectare (2.47 acres). Only divers visit Wolf. There is no chumming in Galapagos. This is where sharks come naturally. There are no land visits. Wolf is located 115 miles north of the central islands.
Sightings include huge schools of hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks, whale sharks (in season), silky sharks, eagle rays, sea lions, fur seals, mantas, turtles, jacks, trumpetfish, butterfly fish, morish idols, moray eels and dolphins. Some sites at Wolf are covered in coral and all of the tropical fish species that live on coral reefs. Dive sites include Shark Bay, The Landslide, La Banana and Islote La Ventana. On the island itself, there are hundreds of thousands of seabirds including all 3 types of boobies in Galapagos—red footed, blue footed and nazca. There are frigates, pelicans, lava gulls and red-billed tropicbirds.
Darwin’s Arch is an icon, the symbol of diving the Galapagos. It is located 142 miles north of the central islands. In addition to Wolf, this is where we find massive schools of hammerheads. Huge, pregnant whale sharks pass through Darwin Island each year for reasons unknown.
Darwin is the warmest dive site in Galapagos due to the tropical Panama current. Divers spend a lot of the experience stationary, on a platform that drops into the blue where hammerheads swim against the current. It is like being on the side of a hammerhead highway watching traffic pass. One can leave the platform to swim out into the blue when a whale shark is spotted. That sometimes means swimming through the hammerheads, a truly magnificent experience you will carry with you forever.
Spend a final day exploring these two islands’ world-renowned dive sites. Enjoy 2 morning dives at Darwin and 1-2 more dives at Wolf in the afternoon. There is an optional night dive at the Anchorage site. Anchorage has a sandy bottom where you may see garden eels and the red-lipped batfish.
January-May: Visit Isabela Island’s Coka Port and Cape Marshall. The latter is a near-vertical wall of volcanic rock that plummets to the bottom of the sea, boasting manta rays, hammerheads, sun fish and sometimes huge schools of the endemic salema. Not only is the topography of this site distinct and fascinating, but so is the marine life! The usual sea turtles and sea lions swim along with you, as do the Chevron barracuda, yellow fin tuna, marbled rays, mobula rays, snappers and more!
June-December: At Cape Douglas, fur sea lions and Galapagos sea lions mingle with the snacking marine iguanas and penguins that zoom past. Highlighting an enormous amount of the small stuff, Punta Vicente Roca offers up a sweet home to octopi, sea horses, red-lipped batfish, frogfish and nudibranchs. The mola mola, or sun fish has been spotted here as well. This drift wall dive will bring you up close and personal to a long list of invertebrates including sponges and flat worms. Keep your eyes peeled for the endemic camotillo and the occasional Port Jackson shark!
Just one of the many islets that help form the archipelago, the Cousin’s Rock dive site has a great deal to offer the advanced diver. Spend 1-2 dives exploring sloping rock plate formations and a wall that drops farther than the eye can see. Come across hidden sea horses and octopi, Galapagos black coral, frogfish, and hammerheads and Galapagos sharks!
On dry land, the El Chato reserve is divided into two areas: Caseta and Chato. The trail begins at Santa Rosa, 13.7 miles from Puerto Ayora, with the Caseta route being the more challenging. The reserve allows visitors to observe giant tortoises in the wild during the dry season and is also a good place to spot short-eared owls, Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, Galapagos rails and paint-billed crakes.
Also on dry land, the Charles Darwin Research Station is home to turtles ranging in size from 3 inches (new hatchlings) to 4 feet long. Subspecies of turtles interact with one another and many of the older turtles are accustomed to humans stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The babies are kept until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a restaurant in Puerto Ayora (added cost).
In the morning, be transferred to the San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.

8-Day Naturalist Itinerary
The 8-day Naturalist Calipso Galapagos cruise operates round-trip from San Cristobal, with visits to Bartolome, Santiago, Fernandina, Isabela, North Seymour, South Plaza, Floreana, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz islands.
Take a morning flight from Quito or Guayaquil to San Cristobal, where you will pass through immigration and baggage claim. Be transferred to the yacht and have time to settle into your cabin before lunch and a welcome briefing. In the afternoon, visit Witch Hill. Located on the northern coast of San Cristobal, this eroded hill and its surroundings present one of the most picturesque beaches in the Galapagos, with its white powdery sand and the abundance of animals. Wildlife includes sea turtles, rays and various types of booby birds. The clear water provides an excellent opportunity for enjoying swimming and snorkeling.
Head to Bartolome Island where the famous Pinnacle Rock is found. Bartolome consists of an extinct volcano with a variety of red, orange, black and even green volcanic formations. Take a trail of stairs to the summit of the volcano (about 30-40 minutes) to enjoy one of the best views of the islands! Also visit a small, beautiful beach surrounded by the only vegetation found on this barren island. The beach is perfect for snorkeling; possibly even see and swim with Galapagos penguins.
In the afternoon, visit Egas Port. Also known as James Bay, this site on Santiago Island is home to the curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to the coastline with gorgeous tide pools and grottos full of fauna. Here the Galapagos furseals bathe in the sun. This is also a great snorkeling site.
Cross the Bolivar Channel that divides Isabela and Fernandina Islands, land at Espinoza Point, and after walking past a colony of marine iguanas and a group of sea lions, reach the island’s highlight: the flightless cormorant nesting site. This area also provides a great opportunity to see the Galapagos hawk.
This afternoon, visit Tagus Cove on Isabela Island which is located across from Fernandina Island, near the Bolivar Channel dividing the two islands. This spot has been frequented by ships since the 1800s, using the area as an anchorage site. Trails winding by Lake Darwin up to a ridge display wonderful views.
This morning, visit Urbina Bay, located at the base of Alcedo Volcano on the west coast between Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay. This area experienced a major uplift in 1954, causing the land to rise over 16 feet. The coast expanded half a mile out, leaving marine life stranded on the new shore. This area is also a great place for snorkeling.
This afternoon, visit Moreno Point, located southwest of Elizabeth Bay. Here a dry landing onto what was once flowing lava is possible. The lava has left craters in its wake which formed crystal tide pools. By looking into the pools, one can peer into another world as the marine life drifts by. In the brackish pools of this area, possibly see pink flamingos, white-cheeked pintails and common gallinules. Look carefully into the pools and hope to see white-tip reef sharks and some sea turtles.
In North Seymour one may see Galapagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies and magnificent frigate birds which are abundant on this island. North Seymour was formed by a series of submarine lava flows containing layers of sediment that were uplifted by tectonic activity. The island is characterized by its arid vegetation zone.
South Plaza, a small island with steep cliffs, was formed by rising lava and is now covered by Opuntia cacti. It is also home to one of the largest sea lion colonies as well as colorful yellow and red land iguanas. The most characteristic plant is the Sesuvium. During the rainy season its color is a greenish to yellowish tone and in the dry season (end of June through January) a bright red.
This morning, land on a beach and head to a spot where 18th century whalers placed a wooden barrel used as an unofficial mailbox. The tradition continues today as visitors leave addressed postcards in the barrel and sort through left mail to deliver upon their return home. Baroness Viewing Point is a fantastic place to absorb the environment of the Galapagos. Once inhabited by an indulgent baroness and her three lovers, the history of this island is intriguing. The legends about this baroness are associated with a fascinating murder mystery. There are easy trails in this area for exploring the flora and fauna of Floreana.
This afternoon, Cormorant Point hosts a large flamingo lagoon where other birds such as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails can also be seen. The beaches on this island are distinct: The Green Beach is named so due to its green color, which comes from a high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the Four Sand Beach is composed of white coral.
Santa Fe Island (Barrington) is home to the small picturesque bay and anchorage on the island’s northeast coast. The bay has two visitor trails: one leading to a scenic viewpoint atop a cliff, and the other spanning from a small beach to a tall prickly pear cactus forest.
In the afternoon visit “Fausto Llerena” Giant Tortoises Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity; this is home to tortoises ranging in size from 3 inches (new hatchlings) to 4-feet-long adults. Subspecies of the giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The babies are kept until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own.
The Gianni Arismendy Interpretation Center is part of an environment project. The tour of this center will explore the natural history of the islands including human interaction and conservation efforts. The Museum of Natural History explains the volcanic origin of the archipelago, ocean currents, climate and the arrival of endemic species. The Human History exhibit chronologically describes significant events such as discovery and colonization of the islands. After this final visit, be transferred to the San Cristobal airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
Included

Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.
Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (inflatable skiffs). Trip members will walk hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

Terms & Conditions
This trip is subject to AdventureSmith Explorations Terms and Conditions. Please read this information carefully and call us if you have any questions. Your Adventure Specialist will send you a unique link to complete this form along with a packing list and extensive pre-departure and travel insurance information upon booking confirmation.
Arrival & Departure
Most flights to the Galapagos will depart Quito or Guayaquil between 6:00am and 11:00am on Day 1 and return between 2:00pm and 6:00pm on the final day. We highly recommend travelers arrive to Ecuador two days prior to their Galapagos cruise. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our Booking Flights resource page. Note: Your passport must be valid 6 months after your Ecuador trip concludes.
Internal Flights
Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. On flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands, baggage weight limits are currently 50 pounds for checked items, and 17 pounds for carry-on plus a small personal item. Subject to change.
Activities
There are numerous opportunities to swim and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, floating vest and net bag) are available for the duration of the cruise. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.
Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (inflatable skiffs). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.
Room Configuration
Single travelers wishing to book a double-occupancy cabin may do so at an 50% supplement of the per-person listed rate in select cabins upon availability. If you would like to share accommodations with another guest of the same gender, we will be happy to try to accommodate you in select cabin categories. This program allows you to pay the per person double-occupancy rate whether or not a roommate is found. Contact AdventureSmith for further details and availability. Groups of 4-14 passengers will receive a 10% discount.
Families & Children
Children up to 14 years and 11 months old receive 20% off the double occupancy rate. Kids 6 years and older are welcome aboard all departure dates for individual bookings. On select departures, kids ages 6–14 may also enjoy dedicated onboard activities including a bridge tour, tailored kids menus, ice cream festival, family-friendly movie night, wildlife trivia and games, plus occasional amenities and surprises.
Travel Insurance
Protect your travel investment with insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. For best value and coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, consider purchasing a policy at time of booking. Learn more about travel insurance or get a free quote.
We strongly recommend that you travel to Galapagos Province with travel insurance that contains medical coverage. Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.
Itinerary Notes
Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.
