Scoresby Sund Aurora Borealis
Spend 10-12 days experiencing the natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, at a maximum intensity on this special voyage to the Scoresby Sund, East Greenland, the longest fjord in the world, aboard a selection of small expedition ships.
Experience the aurora borealis, or northern lights, at a maximum intensity on this special 10-day voyage to Scoresby Sund, East Greenland. It is the longest fjord in the world, and at this time of year, the conditions are optimal to experience the phenomenal northern lights.
The Scoresby Sund Aurora Borealis Arctic cruise begins and ends in Reykjavik, cruising round-trip from Akureyri, Iceland. Set off on the 108-guest Plancius. Cross the Arctic Circle north to East Greenland and back. Look for flashing icebergs on Greenland’s east coast. Zodiac past glacier fronts, basalt columns and ice formations at Vikingebugt. At Danmark Island, find the remains of an Inuit settlement abandoned 200 years ago. Photograph azure icebergs against a red sediment backdrop near the Rode Fjord and search for musk oxen and rich foliage.
Send a postcard from Ittoqqortoormiit, a town with 500 inhabitants and plenty of sled dogs to meet. Time at sea is perfect for witnessing the aurora borealis, or northern lights, and searching for seabirds including fulmar, kittiwake, gannet and rafts of common guillemot. Greenland and its surrounding waters are home to an impressive array of wildlife. There are about 50 bird species on the island such as gyrfalcon, snowy owl, and barnacle and pink-footed goose. If you’ve ever wanted to see the aurora borealis, the time is right on this itinerary.
In addition to the main 10-day itinerary, longer 11- and 12-day routes fly from Iceland to meet the ship in Greenland and then either fly or sail back, aboard the ice-strengthened, 33-guest motorsailor Rembrandt van Rijn.

2026 East Greenland - Scoresby Sund, Including Long Hikes Itinerary
The East Greenland – Scoresby Sund, Including Long Hikes cruise operates round-trip from Akureyri, Iceland, where the ship embarks and disembarks following a crossing of the Denmark Strait. In 2026, Days 4 & 5 offer a different long hike opportunity.
The journey begins in the morning, where by request, you can transfer via chartered bus from the city hall of Reykjavik to the embarkation point in Akureyri. Arrive in the afternoon after a six-hour drive through northern Iceland. This transfer must be booked and paid for in advance. In the early evening, embark the expedition ship and enjoy dinner on board as the ship leaves Iceland and sails north toward the Denmark Strait.
While sailing north you’re likely to see fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets and common guillemots. You then cross the Arctic Circle, possibly spotting whales. By evening, the first icebergs flash into sight with your approach to the east Greenland coast, near Brewster.
Today, reach Scoresbysund, sailing along the glaciated Volquart Boons Coast. Zodiac cruise along one of the glacier fronts of this coast, along with a visit to the basalt columns and ice formations of Vikingebugt. In the afternoon, plan to sail by the east coast of Milne Land among a multitude of giant icebergs. If it’s also possible to land at Charcot Havn, then you will make a walk to the Charcot Glacier. Then continue by Bjørneør and sail into Øfjord.
The goal is a Zodiac cruise near Sorte Ø, surrounded by icebergs. Their austere blue-white contrasts sharply with the sediment slopes nearby. The afternoon plan is to sail through the northern parts of Røde Fjord and into Harefjord, with the chance to see musk oxen and warm autumnal foliage.
In the morning, encounter colossal icebergs, some over 328 feet high and more than 3,280 feet in length. Most of the bergs are grounded as the fjord is only about 1,312 feet deep here. You then land near Sydkap, with fine views of Hall Bredning and a good shot of seeing Arctic hares.
Today’s long walk goes from Sydkap to Nordøstbugt (7.5 miles/7.5km to the northeast), where the river coming from Holger Danskes Briller flows into the sea. Plan to walk south along the shore to Satakajik, seeing whale vertebrae and the remains of Thule summer houses. Passengers who opt out of the long walking group will join at this location for their second excursion of the day.
Today make a tundra landing on Liverpool Land, in Hurry Inlet. In the afternoon, visit Ittoqqortoormiit, the biggest settlement near Scoresbysund with about 500 inhabitants. Stop in the post office to purchas postcard stamps or just wander around to see the sled dogs and the drying skins of seals and musk oxen. In the afternoon sail south, passing the picturesque landscapes of the Blosseville Coast.
The island of Stewart Ø is an important hunting station for the people of Scoresby Sund and also a good area to spot polar bears, narwals and the beautiful remains of Thule houses.
Turner Sound and Rømer Fjord grant you the opportunity to sail far inland, as they have no glacier front at the head and are not clogged with ice. In this location, you may get the opportunity to spot narwhals.
The whole day at sea grants excellent opportunities to see large whales, seabird migration and, at night, the magical aurora borealis (northern lights).
Disembark in Akureyri and transfer by chartered bus (a six-hour drive that must be booked in advance) to the bus stop Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre at Austurbakki, Reykjavík, taking home memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies.

2027 East Greenland - Scoresby Sund, Including Long Hikes Itinerary
The East Greenland – Scoresby Sund, Including Long Hikes cruise operates round-trip from Akureyri, Iceland, where the ship embarks and disembarks following a crossing of the Denmark Strait. In 2027, Days 4 & 5 offer a different long hike opportunity.
While sailing north across the Denmark Strait, you’re likely to see fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets and common guillemots. You then cross the Arctic Circle, possibly spotting whales. By evening, as snow-capped peaks appear on the horizon, the first icebergs flash into sight with your approach to the east Greenland coast, near Kap Brewster and the mouth of Scoresby Sund.
In the morning, you’ll likely encounter colossal icebergs, some over 328 feet (100m) high and more than a kilometer long; most of them are grounded, as the fjord is only about 400 meters deep. Aim to land at Tyskit Nunat (Greenlandic for Germany) where, in 1930-31, a party of Alfred Wegener’s research team wintered and performed scientific observations. Wegener himself perished on the ice cap that winter.
In the early afternoon, land at Saakattaakajik, where you’ll see the remains of Thule summer houses with whale vertebrae incorporated into the construction. From there, you may make a good walk in the direction of Sydkap (7.5 miles or 12 km), where you also may arrive by Zodiac, depending on weather and sea conditions. In the early evening, sail by the Bjørne Øer (Bear Islands) archipelago at the eastern mouth of Øfjord.
After having sailed through narrow and breathtaking Øfjord, surrounded by mountains in excess of 6,560 feet (2,000m) high, including the spectacular Grundtvigskirken, arrive at the Hoffman Peninsula, where travelers often see muskoxen. Here, excellent opportunities for long hikes present themselves, crossing the tundral peninsula from Harefjord to Rypefjord. Non-long walkers will be offered excursions on the south side of the peninsula in the morning and on the north side in the afternoon. In the early evening, once again enjoy the spectacular views of Øfjord as you retrace your route past Grundtvigskirken.
On the Volquart Boons Kyst, you may enjoy a Zodiac cruise in Vikingebugt near its glacier front, where there are good chances to see polar bears, on the ice shoals in the sea. A walk on the striking basalt columns at Helgenaes provides fantastic views back across towards Øfjord and the distant shores of Jameson Land, and opportunities to see good examples of patterned ground. In the evening, plan to sail some way westward along more of the many glacier fronts on Volquart Boons Kyst.
In the morning, waim to land at Hurry Inlet, in Liverpool Land. Your landing site will likely be on the east side of Hurry Inlet, close to a historic hunter’s cabin, which was erected by the Romanian Dumbrava in 1930. In autumn, the residents of Ittoqqortoormiit fish for sea trout in the surrounding lakes. Walks along the coast provide excellent views over Neils Klinter (Cliffs) at the opposite side of Hurry Inlet, famous for Jurassic fossils. An alternative could also be Hareelv, where travelers often meet muskoxen.
Your afternoon stop is Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest settlement in Scoresbysund, with about 500 inhabitants. At the post office, you can buy stamps for your postcards, or stroll around to see the sled dogs and drying skins of seals and musk oxen. The church may also be open, where information about the history of Ittoqqortoormiit is available. In the afternoon, sail south, passing Kap Brewster and the picturesque landscapes of the Blosseville Coast.
The island of Steward Ø is an important hunting area with cabins for the people of Scoresby Sund, with well-preserved remains of dwellings from the Thule people from centuries ago. The hill behind these cultural remains provides superb views of the glaciers nearby. This is a good area to spot polar bears among the glacier ice, narwals and different species of seals.
The exciting narrow Turner Sound with strong currents, where walruses are occasionally spotted, and Rømer Fjord, both grant the opportunity to sail far inland, as they have no glacier front at the head and are not clogged with ice. Here, you may again get the chance to spot narwhals. Halfway into Rømer Fjord on the south side, there are also warm springs. This stretch of coastline is rugged and magnificent – a true example of the ancient beauty of Greenland.
A sea day grants you the opportunity to spot whales and seabirds, and at night, the magical northern lights. On your journey back towards Akureyri, you may pass the tiny islet of Kolbeinsey and the Icelandic island of Grimsey. As you approach Iceland as evening falls, the skies may glimmer with the aurora one final time.
Disembark in Akureyri and transfer by chartered bus (a six-hour drive that must be booked in advance) to the bus stop Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre at Austurbakki, Reykjavík.

11-Day East Greenland - Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis, Fly Round-Trip Itinerary
This 11-day itinerary begins and ends with a charter flight connecting Keflavik, Iceland, and embarks and disembarks the ship at Constable Pynt in east Greenland.
Arrive by chartered plane from Keflavik and land at Constable Pynt, the airfield at the head of Hurry Inlet. This area is known for its remarkably rich geological history. Embark the ship and set off on an amazing voyage along the longest fjord in the world.
Enjoy the sights while sailing the glaciated Volquart Boons Coast. Here, possibly set out on a Zodiac cruise along one of the shoreline glacier fronts, with the first activity near Månegletcher or Vikingebugt.
Sail by the east coast of Milne Land among a multitude of giant icebergs. If it’s possible to also land at Charcot Havn, then make a walk to the Charcot Glacier before continuing by the Bjørneør and sailing to Øfjord.
Visit the east entrance of one of the most impressive fjords in the world: Ø Fjord is almost 40 nautical miles long (74 km, 46 miles), with mountains on each side up to 2,000 meters high (6,562 feet), and icebergs that drift over depths of more than 1,000 meters (3,281 feet). The aim is to land at Jyttehavn and hike the tundra in mythic surroundings.
You may also sail into Harefjord, Rypefjord and Rödefjord, walking into C. Hoffmanhalvöya and on Storö. Then land near Sydkap, where you can see colossal icebergs, some of them over 100 meters (328 feet) high and more than a kilometer long (.62 mile). Most of these bergs are grounded, as the fjord is only about 400 meters deep (1,312 feet). At Sakatajik you can also view the remains of Thule winter houses. As many as 20 people lived here once, hunting Greenland whales and building houses out of their vertebrae. If there is not too much cloud cover, you might enjoy the magical lightshow of the aurora borealis today.
At the western shores of Jameson Land lies a vast tundra with grazing musk oxen. Try to make a landing on one of the areas, such as Tyskit Nunat, remembering Alfred Wegener’s efforts to cross Vandreblokken. You may also visit Kap Hooker or a lovely lagoon west of Kap Stewart.
Today’s stop is Ittoqqortoormiit, the largest settlement in Scoresbysund at about 500 inhabitants. At the post office you can buy stamps for your postcards or just stroll around to see the sled dogs and drying skins of seals and musk oxen.
In the morning, stop on the south coast of Jameson Land, at a lagoon near Kap Stewart. Here the waders and geese are collecting for their autumn migration, and musk oxen and collared lemmings survive on the meager vegetation. Further inside Hurry Inlet, you may take a walk near the head of the fjord as well as one of the rivers that terminate here. Here is a chance of a climb up the mountain of J.P. Koch Fjeld, near Hareelv. In this remarkable area, scientists found fossils that linked fish and amphibians in the lower Cretaceous period. Spend the night at anchor off Constable Pynt.
Disembark and take the chartered plane from Constable Pynt to Keflavik, taking home memories for a lifetime.

12-Day East Greenland - Scoresby Sund - Iceland, Aurora Borealis, Fly & Sail Itinerary
This 12-day itinerary begins with a charter flight from Keflavik, Iceland, to embark the ship at Constable Pynt in east Greenland, and ends by cruising across the Denmark Strait to disembark at Akureyri, Iceland, with an optional overland transfer to Reykjavik.
If there is not too much cloud cover, you might enjoy the magical lightshow of the aurora borealis during these days at sea.
Disembark in the Icelandic town of Akureyri, taking home memories that will accompany you wherever the next adventure lies. If requested, you can take a chartered bus (6-hour drive) to Reykjavik.
Included
Voyage aboard the indicated vessel in the itinerary; all meals throughout the voyage aboard the ship including snacks, coffee and tea; all shore excursions and activities throughout the voyage by Zodiac; program of lectures by noted naturalists and leadership by experienced expedition staff; free use of snow shoes; transfers and baggage handling between airport and ship in Greenland harbors on the chartered group flights; all miscellaneous service taxes and port charges throughout the program; AECO fees and governmental taxes; comprehensive pre-departure material; basic WiFi up to 1.5GB per 24 hours (additional data available for purchase on board).

The Plancius is ice-strengthened and was specially built for oceanographic voyages. The 3 diesel engines generate 1.230 horse-power each, giving the vessel a speed of 10-12 knots. She has also been upgraded for comfort and cruising as the Plancius's diesel-electric propulsion system reduces the noise and vibration of the engines considerably. In 2019, the ship's superior cabins were fully upgraded, the corridors of deck 5 were given new carpeting and there were also renovations made to the ship's restaurant area. And in 2025, Plancius was equipped with IcySea, a software providing near-real-time ice information to ensure safe navigation.
