Spend 2 days in Glacier Bay National Park and visit the amazing tidewater glaciers of Margerie and Grand Pacific. Whale watching, birding and Chatham Strait are particular highlights of this itinerary.
Arrive in Juneau and be transferred from the airport to the hospitality area. Upon boarding, be greeted by crew with champagne and smiles. Set sail for a week of scenic channels and secluded wilderness.
Kickstart the morning with on-deck yoga stretches and a strong cup of coffee. Energized and snug in your kayak, glide around in remote bays off Icy Strait through giant bullwhip kelp that can grow to over 100 feet long. Join the gang in a skiff to a rocky outcropping to watch sea lions play. Or step into mud boots for a forest hike with your top-notch naturalist guides who have plenty to share about everything Alaska—marine biology, plants and even geology. On board, soak it all in with views from the hot tub.
This crown jewel of America’s national parks covers 3.3 million acres (that’s a tad smaller than the state of Connecticut). Let that sink in. Most visitors see the same sliver of the park as everyone else. Not you. You’re going the farthest and exploring parts that 99% of visitors never go to. And you have two days to do it. Get started!
Taylor Bay sea stacks and rocky shores make for good adventure. Or hike the outwash field of glaciers winding down the Fairweather Mountain Range. The cool breeze off the nearby snow and icefields is energizing. If you motor over to Dundas Bay, keep your eye out for bears, humpbacks, and if you’re lucky, a wolf sighting. Kayak the bay. Bushwhack into the forest. Discover Glacier Bay.
Your camera’s memory card needs plenty of room. South Marble Island is abuzz with activity. Rare sea birds, black oystercatchers and orange-beaked tufted puffins can’t be missed. A colony of raucous sea lions adds to the hubbub. They add a distinct aroma to the air, too. Tucking into silent Tidal Inlet—the stomping grounds for bears, wolves, mountain goats, eagles—the backdrop is spectacular. At the end of the western-most arm of the bay sits Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers. And possible views of glacial calving. Take it all in on deck.
Kick off the morning with on-deck yoga stretches (your guides love it when you join them). Meander through glacier-carved fjords along the Chichagof coast. Then stop. It’s a prime time to lower the kayaks and skiffs. Camera in hand, set off on land and sea explorations. Closer inspection by skiff, moss-dripping trees run right down to the water. Any bears in there? With one of the world’s largest populations of bears, it’s possible. Go searching for giant trees and tidal pools. Hiking in the Tongass National Forest, it won’t take long to find them. Your eagle-eyed guides lead the pack—and pull up the rear.
Humpbacks beeline it here each season to feed on krill, zooplankton and herring. Watch for whales feasting in these abundant glacial waters. Hang out and enjoy the show. Based on wind and weather, your expedition team has the lineup of adventures all mapped out. Cruise past Five Fingers Lighthouse, Alaska’s oldest light station and the Brothers Islands, where sea lions nap on rocky nobs. Paddle into the deeps of Port Houghton or Windham Bay or head ashore for a hike. Somewhere nearby, carrot-billed black oystercatchers are saying hello. Tonight, toast another big day in Alaska.
Take an early peek out your window. Fjord cliffs reach skyward. Floating ice. And deep u-shaped valleys. There’s no abracadabra here. Mother Nature’s magic is real. Cruise past harbor seals and their pups lounging on chunks of ice. In classic fjord form, Tracy Arm delivers with the cotton-candy-blue Twin Sawyers glacier of its farthest reaches.
Tides permitting, your skiff driver knows the ropes and guides you along. It’s a mashup of towering walls, temperamental currents and the Coastal Mountains. So many waterfalls. Mountain goats show off fancy foot work on the cliffs. Look for them. Your captain joins you tonight for a Farewell Dinner. Celebrate and reminisce about your Alaskan journey with a “photo journal” by your crew.
Linger over breakfast this morning while cruising into Juneau. Wish the crew and new friends goodbye. Then it’s off to the airport or extend your hotel stay or land tour.

The Napo Wildlife Center, surrounded by a 53,000-acre rainforest biosphere reserve within Yasuni National Park, offers the most luxurious accommodations available in Ecuador’s Amazon. The lodge is located on the banks of Anangucocha Lake and is a model of sustainable tourism in conjunction with the Anangu Quichua Community.
Fly from Quito over the Andes Mountains to the Amazon Basin town of Coca for embarkation on a motorized canoe journey 50 miles (2 hours) down the Napo River. At the border of the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, continue the journey on a 2-hour canoe paddle along the Anangu Creek (motorized vessels are not allowed) or enjoy a guided hike 1.5 miles to the lodge.
AdventureSmith Explorations' Napo Wildlife Center review includes a detailed description and photo gallery. Our adventure travel experts have stayed at Napo Wildlife Center firsthand and can help compare the Napo Wildlife Center with other adventure lodging and Ecuador land tours.
Choose this award-winning lodge if you are seeking a remote atmosphere with comfortable amenities and different ways to experience one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, including a central observation tower with an elevator. Of note, the Napo Wildlife Center is owned and managed by its native Anangu people.
The Napo Wildlife Center's architecture features the traditional thatched-hut designs of the Quichua people, with al fresco spaces that enable comfort even during the heat of the day. The central structure of Napo Wildlife Center, the main hall, offers several comfortable social areas in an open air environment, spread across seven floors. The welcoming lobby provides an entrance point to multiple floors, uniquely serviced by a glass elevator. A fully-stocked "canoe" bar compliments the high-tech kitchen and large dining hall, all featuring rich wooden beams and floors, and warm lighting. Attached to the bar is a 120-foot viewing tower with four platforms that offer panoramic views. On a clear day, views can reach the snow capped Andes Mountains, making for a spectacular sunset.
The 24-hour library creates space for learning about the plethora of wildlife that may be seen. The library is furnished with a TV and video collection along with a wide variety of books from natural history, biology, conservation, literature as well as magazines and scientific reports. This space also plays host to briefings by naturalist guides. The lodge boutique provides the opportunity to shop for souvenirs, personal care items and useful accessories. In addition, handicrafts are available at the interpretation center’s gift shop located at the first clay lick.
The Interpretation Centre, Kury Muyo, invites guests to learn more about the Quichua people, including a daily ritualistic morning offering of Guayusa. A natural beverage consumed for many centuries, Guayusa gives adventurous travelers energy for the rest of the day. The Interpretation Center is a place visited not only by guests of Napo Wildlife Center but also Quichuas from other communities and students of the Anangu community, where visitors learn all about ancestral traditions and the Quichua Anangu Community's way of life; flora and fauna of the region; surviving in the jungle; medicinal plants and more.
Gravity-pressurized water is filtered through a reverse osmosis system, ensuring is it safe to use. Hybrid systems, solar panels, state-of-the-art batteries and noiseless diesel engines provide 24-hour electricity and plenty of 120-volt outlets in cabins. Because Napo Wildlife Center is owned and operated by the native Anangu people, funds from the ecolodge have a direct impact on conservation efforts for the protected 82-square-mile surrounding area. By inviting travelers into the Amazon, the community employs itself while preserving Quichua traditions. The community voluntarily decided to ban hunting, fishing and logging more than 15 years ago, allowing nature to thrive. Funds also go toward the basic, primary and secondary schools, food for the children, satellite internet and the local health clinic. By reinvesting funds into the local community, Napo Wildlife Center helps ensure stewards of the rainforest remain there.
The kitchen chefs create a variety of traditional Ecuadorian dishes and international favorites to tantalize the senses. Vegan and vegetarian diets can be accommodated, as well as special orders for a fee. Delicious food may be enhanced by the bar's offerings of freshly-mixed cocktails and other concoctions made from locally-sourced ingredients. Curious guests may choose to try a signature drink including the Napo Wild, Morphorita, Anangu Cocha and Black Caiman. The expansive dining hall, located at the center of the Napo Wildlife Center grounds, accommodates all guests in one seating with a casual atmosphere. Depending on lodge occupancy, breakfasts may be served buffet-style, while lunches and dinners are plated and served by a polished serving staff.
A diverse network of 26 trails though a variety of forest types surrounds the lodge. On daily walks, discover fascinating plants, camouflaged insects, leaf cutter ants, lizards, tortoises, frogs and an array of birds on naturalist-guided or self-guided hikes. At sunrise, in the afternoon and each night after dinner guests can join a native Anangu guide/Yasuni Park Ranger on a hike among the surrounding rain forest. Hikes can vary in length from easy walks to challenging treks. The lodge staff is constantly aware of wildlife movements, reporting when and where wildlife can be found. Although rare, even the largest mammals like jaguar, puma, tapir, giant anteater and giant armadillo have been spotted in the region. The surrounding lake and creeks are open to exploration aboard a dugout canoe paddled by expert guides, looking for black caiman, giant otters and piranha.
The highlight of Napo Wildlife Center is a visit to Ecuador's most accessible parrot clay licks. Comfortable blinds at each lick provide outstanding views and excellent photo opportunities. Activity kicks off at the main lick at 7:00am and at second blind in the afternoon. Species include: Mealy, blue-headed, yellow-crowned, orange-winged and orange-cheeked parrots, cobalt-winged, dusky-headed and white-eyed parakeets. In optimal weather at least 800 individuals can be spotted. Enjoy a full day excursion visiting both blinds with a box lunch, or a half day visiting the main lick and returning for lunch at the lodge. Over 562 species of birds have been recorded at the Napo Wildlife Center, more than 1/3 of all of Ecuador's birds. Expert resident guides will assist in spotting the amazing diversity of colorful birds.
In addition to the observation tower beside the lodge, a 118-foot observation tower is a 20-minute walk away, offering unsurpassed opportunities to view the colorful inhabitants of the lake and surrounding rain forest canopy. This magnificent structure stands next to a giant Kapok tree and accommodates up to 15 guests. This is a great place to spot some of the 11 species of monkey found in the region. Other sightings include actively feeding flocks of birds toucans, macaws, colorful tanagers or even a three-toed sloth.
Anangu is not only home to the lodge, it is also the ancestral territory of a Quichua indigenous community. Anangu people are active participants in the conservation and management of the park as well as partners in tourism. Visits to Anangu homes and schools provide insight into how these people live and learn. Guests can join families on their daily activities harvesting bananas, coco and manioc, a starchy staple root for Amazonian people; or help prepare chicha, a traditional drink based on fermenting manioc. Anglers of all levels can try fishing in Amazon rivers with help from the local natives and their particular techniques. The Anangu will also enchant travelers with traditional music while teaching its accompanying dance moves; they also offer opportunities to experience sacred ceremonies.
The lodge consists of 20 luxury room options, each over 450 square feet with lake views. Features include private bathrooms with 24-hour on-demand hot water and electricity; safety boxes; ceiling fans; mosquito nets; screened windows; always-accessible internet and laundry service (each for a fee); and private porches overlooking the forest and lake.

A stay at La Selva Amazon EcoLodge & Spa is a special experience from the start, combining a flight from Quito, motorized canoe ride, short walk through the jungle and a ride in a non-motorized canoe. Luggage is handled by representatives throughout the journey. In Quito, a representative meets travelers at the airport (or arranges a hotel pick up) to provide boarding passes and make luggage arrangements for the next flight to Coca. Flights to Coca are available every day except Sunday. In Coca, a new representative ushers guests to the dock. A motorized canoe then takes travelers down the Napo River (approximately 2.5 hours). A short jungle walk follows this trip to finally board a paddle canoe to cross Garzacocha Lagoon before arriving at the lodge. Upon arrival to La Selva's main dock, the staff will help carry luggage (carry-on baggage as well as camera gear will be the guest’s responsibility). A complimentary signature drink and introduction to the bilingual naturalist guide welcomes guests to the lodge.
La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat offers many inviting spaces to relax. The sunny dock features lounge chairs, umbrellas for those who wish to recline and a jumping-off point for swimming and kayaking when a cool down is desired. Special spa treatments are also available as a private experience on the dock. Nature trails flow through the property, connecting cabanas, an open-air spa pavilion, the main lodge, a serene space known as "Samay Wasi" or "resting room," and various wildlife viewing areas. The lodge itself overlooks Lake Garzacocha, with open-air seating complete with instruments to watch for wildlife in and around the waters below. The lodge also offers a refurbished dining room with al fresco seating and a fully-stocked bar.
Here is the Observation Deck, offering views from directly above the dining room:
La Selva EcoLodge strives to embody sustainable tourism. By employing members of the local Pilchi community, La Selva has reduced the amount of hunting, fishing and tree cutting that are common professions. New engines with low emissions and less fuel consumption are now used for La Selva Lodge's boats on the rivers. On Lake Garzacocha the use of any engine is prohibited. The lodge staff aims to purchase 80% of the food served on site from local communities and ensures the majority of products used are natural and fresh from the surrounding area. Structures were consciously constructed using bamboo taken from sustainable plantations nearby. All-natural amenities and biodegradable products are provided for showers and baths, and waste water is cleaned and then conserved in a natural pond.
The spacious and open dining room and lounge, with panoramic views of Lake Garzacocha, creates an inviting atmosphere. Breakfasts and dinners may also be enjoyed in the expansive Main Bungalow Observatory, for an exclusive dining experience. La Selva EcoLodge's restaurant provides gourmet organic food using local ingredients from its on-site garden, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables. Dishes include exquisite international favorites as well as native flavors. The kitchen specializes in vegetarian and raw food and can accommodate special diets (including vegan, gluten free and kosher) upon request. Friendly bartenders serve guests' requests and tropical drinks special to La Selva Lodge; all can be enjoyed at the fully-stocked bar overlooking the lake.

A variety of self-guided and naturalist-guided hikes by day and night reveal the vast biodiversity of the region. Seek out the thousands of plants and animals that may be within range of the lodge and lagoon, including orchids, ferns, monkeys, caimans, jaguars, turtles, marmosets, frogs and many birds. Kayaks, swimming, self-guided trails and a butterfly garden are also available. An optional visit to the Kichwa community provides the chance to interact with native people and learn about their way of life. La Selva EcoLodge & Retreat also features a guided jungle camping immersion with all equipment included. Guests are provided with a rain poncho and rubber boots for the duration of their stay.
Birdwatching is often a highlight of any stay at La Selva EcoLodge. The lodge is located in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, which has been shown by ornithological studies to contain more species of birds than any other region in Ecuador and more than both the entire USA and Canada combined. Clay licks that draw parrots and other birds create ground-level opportunities to watch birds. The spacious 125-foot rainforest canopy observation tower provides an eye-level view of possible tanagers, parrots, toucans, parakeets, woodpeckers, hoatzins and countless other species. Special birdwatching tours are available.
For rejuvenation, yoga classes on the dock are offered, complete with complimentary mats. A natural pool provides a peaceful place to relax. La Selva's Amazon spa offers innovative and traditionally-crafted treatments on-site, tailored to stimulate circulation and increase relaxation. Customized therapies include reflexology, exfoliation, hot stone massage and various types of baths and body massage, including children's massage. Young visitors can take advantage of the Junior Naturalist Program, with activities like learning to paddle a canoe, practicing non-impactful wilderness travel and learning about rainforest protection practices from community members.

La Selva Amazon Lodge supports local native communities in various ways. The monthly stipend given to the Pilchi community lends support to their schools and community projects, including health care, transportation and sanitary facilities. The lodge staff, comprised of many community members, closely collaborates with locals on management issues like organic farming. La Selva Lodge in Ecuador helped purchase a motorized canoe with a low-emission engine for the local community to use. The nonprofit organization affiliated with La Selva, Fundación Bolivar Education, sends volunteers to the community to aid in conservation projects centered around health care and sanitation, among others. Guests of the lodge can participate in the Pack for a Purpose program, electing to bring and donate various supplies for distribution at the local schools.

To get to the lodge, take a 30-minute flight from Quito to the small Amazonian town of Coca then venture two hours into the rainforest on a motorized canoe, occasionally passing Amazonian villages. A 30-minute naturalist-led jungle walk leads to a short dugout-canoe ride onto the Pilchicocha Lake where the lodge is set.

Choose this lodge if you are looking for a comfortable immersion into the jungle; the lodge was carefully designed to preserve the rainforest ambiance while offering relaxing cabin accommodations.
Sacha Lodge’s story begins in the 1970s when Swiss founder Benny came to Ecuador and was captivated by the Napo River. In 1985 he opened his first tourist lodge, La Casa del Suizo, on the Upper Napo, but as civilization approached he went in search of a place to build a lodge deeper in the forest. When he was taken to the mysterious black water of Pilchicocha Lake, he fell in love with the place and purchased 1200 acres of land surrounding it. With the help of 170 local employees, Sacha Lodge was officially opened in 1992 with six guest rooms. As time went on Benny continued to expand the facilities while purchasing more land, and to date he has acquired 5,000 acres.
Sacha Jungle Lodge blends so seamlessly into its surroundings that to the resident wildlife it’s just another part of the forest. At the heart of the Sacha Lodge experience is the Balsa covered al fresco lounge and restaurant. Named after the Spanish word for a “raft,” this building offers a breathtaking view over the shimmering Pilchicocha Lake. It is the perfect place to read a book with a glass of wine, spot birds, caiman and giant otters, or to watch the crimson sunsets and tremendous thunderstorms.
A small onsite boutique sells essentials like sunblock, mosquito repellent, toiletries and Sacha Lodge souvenirs including logo t-shirts and baseball caps. Complimentary WiFi internet connections are available in the common areas of the lodge. In case of emergency, both cellular telephone and radio communications are available. In addition, each guide maintains permanent radio contact with the lodge during all excursions and activities. Throughout the property, 24-hour electricity is provided by a distant, nearly inaudible generator.
Breakfast and lunch buffets mixing international cuisine with traditional Ecuadorian dishes are served in the Balsa. There are light, healthy options as well as more substantial pasta and meat dishes. The chefs will be happy to cater to any special needs or vegetarian diets with pre-arrival request. An a la carte dinner is served in the restaurant, bringing fine dining to the jungle. Weather allowing, an outdoor barbecue is also a culinary highlight. Menus change daily and will often include the popular paiche, a meaty white fish found in the Amazon region, with the all-important Green Seal of responsible fishing.
A safari-lodge style bar is found above the restaurant and fitted with sofas and stools at the bamboo bar. The bar offers a wide variety of cocktails, liquors, wine and beer to enjoy after an active day. Purified, safe drinking water is available at multiple points around the Lodge. All the drinking water (including ice) comes from a local well and is purified with both porcelain filters and ozone treatment, the most thorough purifying systems available.
A typical day at Sacha Jungle Lodge begins at sunrise to take advantage of the cool morning hours when the rainforest’s animals are most active. Rubber boots and rain ponchos are available for all guests to use while at the lodge, free of charge. Enjoy small groups with a maximum of 6 guests each, with private guides available at added cost.
Activities are spread out over a wide area by land and water to explore several distinct but equally fascinating habitats. Several trails lead through pristine terra firma forest, where kapok trees tower above. Other paths follow strategically raised boardwalks in seasonally flooded forests. The Butterfly House showcases hundreds of local butterflies. Next door, the typical native house hosts a cacao experience including planting, roasting, grinding and tasting. Guided canoe rides are offered by day and night to explore the multiple waterways surrounding Pilchicocha Lake.
On site is the lake pool. Ideal for families, the plunge pool is protected by a mesh cage for safely cooling off in Pilchicocha Lake. You could even spot caiman and giant otters swim by the other side of the net!
Sacha Jungle Lodge also offers day trips into the Yasuni community. Guests learn about traditional ways of living, weaving and pottery from the native Kichwa women while tasting their local cuisine.
There are also multiple ways to view life above the ground. The 940-foot raised treetop walk enables guests to meander through the under-story and view the diverse wildlife from five observational platforms. Playful monkeys and at least 500 species of striking birds can be observed from 135 feet up in the air on Sacha Lodge’s observation tower. The canopy bird walk is a rigid, self-standing suspension walkway, excellent for birding. And the canopy exploration crane enables guests to float up to 140 feet off the ground and explore two acres of rainforest in a secure basket with 360-degree rotation. Finally, the 72-foot Danta Tower, accessed by a paddle canoe ride or 10-minute forest walk, provides mid-story rainforest views—a unique vantage within the trees and to the swamp habitat below.
On average, there are three staff members on duty for every two guests at the lodge. Sacha Lodge's guests are divided into small groups of six for activities, each of which are led by two guides. One is a native guide, raised in the area and with expert knowledge of the rainforest's medicinal and other useful plants. This guide will often share stories from local culture and lead the way with accustomed eyes that are incredible for spotting the jungle's hidden creatures. The second guide is a bilingual naturalist, who has been educated in the biology and ecology of the rainforest, and likely comes from a different country and background. They may translate for the native guides as well as share their own scientific knowledge about any plants and animals.
For birdwatchers, Sacha Jungle Lodge also provides bird specialist guides upon request. These guides know the best spots for hard-to-find species and can easily identify species by both sight and sound. They regularly see up to 60 species a day. If ornithology is an important focus, then a bird specialist guide request should be made in advance.
