The Wild East

As you approach and arrive in Greenland, the first natural features you’ll see will be the towering steep-walled fjords and hanging glaciers. Explore the uninhabited east coast. This area offers opportunities for wildlife sightings, including the possibility of polar bears and humpback whales. Activities include heli-landings, hiking, paddle excursions, Zodiac cruises and shore landings in this remote, ice-laden landscape of tumbling glaciers, alpine vistas and wildlife. Set out for the wild fjords of the uninhabited east coast, one of which is Lindenow Fjord, also known by its Greenlandic name, Kangerlussuaq. Thousands of years ago, groups of Paleo Inuit hunters and fishermen made their home in these isolated fjords, living off the land and surviving mostly on the resources provided by the sea—long before the arrival of European explorers and successive waves of migration prompted mass settlements. Traces of these early inhabitants can be found today against the backdrop of cascading glaciers and steep-walled mountains.

The fjords are where you can observe plenty of wildlife, especially marine mammals. Rare sightings of polar bears are also possible as they drift down from the north on sea ice floes propelled by the East-Greenland current. Humpback whales are often sighted when entering  fjords as the shallowing seas bring an upwelling of nutrients to the surface. While you keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, the magnificent alpine terrain invites you to explore by sea, land and air to immerse yourself completely in the remote icescapes of the region. The wild east is ideal for heli landings, paddle excursions, hiking, Zodiac cruises and shore landings.

Days 7 - 8
The Westlands

Sail along the spectacular west coast of Greenland into the Westlands, the same journey the Greenlandic Norse followed to reach the Western fjords. You’ll experience the contrast between the Greenland Ice Sheet—the second-largest body of ice on the planet—and the grassy valleys of the coast, which is steeped in Viking history, especially at landmarks such as the Kujataa UNESCO World Heritage site. The latter provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the region’s history and cultural traditions, as well as the interaction between Norse and Inuit cultures.

Explore the mammoth Ice Sheet by helicopter, hike the surrounding foothills, cruise through ice-filled waters and engage with local communities. Visit the small settlement of Qassiarsuk, as well as the remains of Erik the Red’s estate of Brattahlíð, both of which offer further insights into South Greenland’s history and culture. You will appreciate quite quickly why Erik the Red chose this land as his home and gave Greenland its name: every direction you look rewards visitors with vistas of blue, ice-strewn waters set against a breathtaking backdrop of lush, verdant valleys and green pastures bursting with blooms.

Unique to Greenland, and indeed the entire Arctic, warm microclimates deep in the fjords have created a surprisingly fertile Arctic Garden of Eden. South Greenlandic farming traditions dating back to Viking days are still kept alive. Many families work their remote sheep farms along the shores of the fjords, their lives very much attuned to the seasons as they produce a variety of organic homegrown produce (such as potatoes, turnips and kale).

Also in the West, find perfect access points to the Greenland Ice Sheet, which you’ll reach by helicopter. You’ll enjoy the most incredible views of the largest mass of ice in the northern hemisphere flowing from the heights of the polar plateau to sea level. Become one of the very few people to ever set foot on this incredible body of ice during your included Greenland Ice Sheet Experience. Over these 2 days you will have the opportunity to explore the Ice Sheet, hike the surrounding foothills, cruise or paddle through the azure ice-filled waters, and engage with local friends and partners during meaningful and in–depth community experiences.

Days 9 - 11
Arctic Patagonia

Transit through the scenic 65-mile-long (105km) Prins Christian Sund (Ikerasassuaq) and explore the dramatic fjords of South Greenland. The team has planned a visit to the village of Aappilattoq, where you can experience local culture, music and traditional foods. The journey continues to the steep-walled 43-mile (70km) Tasermiut Fjord, known as “Arctic Patagonia,” where overnight camping and various excursions are available amidst stunning glaciers and peaks.

The maze of fjords, sounds, islets, inlets and skerries (rocky islands) in and around Cape Farewell (Nunap Isua) at Greenland’s most southern tip possesses its own particular magic. Transiting the Prins Christian Sund (Ikerasassuaq)—one of the world’s most scenic fjords—will be truly unforgettable. You can then look forward to dramatic mountain and seascapes with glaciers tumbling down to the sea, and spectacular vistas around every corner. Inhabiting this domain are Southern Greenlanders living on the frontier, a people as unique as the landscape they call home. This is where the migrating hunting peoples from the east finally settled around the European trading posts.

The few villages in this southern region have gained a level of fame thanks to the inhabitants who remain steadfastly faithful to their hunting and fishing heritage. As mentioned above, hope to visit Aappilattoq, perched on the shores of Prins Christian Sund, to introduce yourself to local partners and friends. Enjoy the opportunity to listen to inhabitants’ stories, hear their music, taste their food, learn about their hunting traditions and perhaps even join a friendly game of soccer as a player or spectator.

Your time in Arctic Patagonia will allow you to marvel at the impressive glacier at its head, with rivers of ice tumbling toward the sea, and the imposing peaks of Nalumasortoq and Ulamertorsuaq that dominate the skyline, making for the most scenic backdrops to your hike or helicopter excursion.

Day 4
Ikersuaq (Bredefjord) Region: Bays, Coves, Islands & Fjords

Your first day of off-ship excursions will introduce you to the Southwest Greenland region known as Bredefjord (Ikersuaq in Greenlandic), a network of bays, coves, islands and fjords surrounded by mountains. As always, weather and sea conditions determine the day’s activities. You will attempt to visit Qalerallit Sermia, which features three glacial faces descending from the Greenland Ice Sheet. With glaciers stretching toward the sea, you may also see— and hear—glacial runoff in the form of cascading streams or waterfalls. Set against the crackling of ice, the silence here is paradoxically loud—and hauntingly beautiful. The terrain, like much of Greenland, is uneven without defined trails, but many locations are suitable for hiking. Some guests may opt to charge uphill to gain an elevated perspective, while others choose to walk slowly and appreciate the landscape. The team accommodates hikers of all levels of ability.

Experience rugged mountain landscapes and striking glacial scenery. Glaciers can be found in many bays and coves, and you will see icebergs of various shapes and sizes drift by. You may have the chance to explore them more intimately by Zodiac—from a safe distance, of course.

Day 5
Kujataa: Exploring Norse History

South Greenland is steeped in lore surrounding the famous Greenlandic Viking, Erik the Red, and the seemingly sudden disappearance of Norse settlements. It’s no surprise that many of the guests have come in the hopes of witnessing vestiges of this lost civilization. Today, you’ll get to walk in the footsteps of those long-gone Vikings. You’ll visit Narsaq, on Tunulliarfik Fjord, where you’ll immediately notice the brightly colored homes that have been occupied for generations. Ranging from reds and greens to blues and yellows, many trimmed in bright white, the community stands out as particularly picturesque. Guided walks in and around Narsaq will include some of the oldest Norse settlement ruins in Greenland— adjacent to an active community of locals going about their day-to-day lives.

You may also visit Qassiarsuk, home to Brattahlíð, the site of Erik the Red’s original estate. Located in a surprisingly verdant part of South Greenland, the landscape is lush with vegetation and dotted with grazing sheep. It’s this fertile setting that drew Norse settlers here more than a thousand years ago, and today, the area offers a vivid picture of that distant past. Carefully restored with reconstructions of original Norse buildings, the site invites visitors to imagine daily life in this historic settlement. A small community of Greenlandic residents still lives in a place where ancient Norse traditions and modern Greenlandic culture thrive side by side.

Day 6
Tasermiut Fjord: The Arctic Patagonia

The deep fjord of Tasermiut is striking in its stark natural beauty. Steep mountains rise abruptly from the sea. Sharp peaks and ridgelines dominate the skyline, while the valley floors and lower slopes support a surprisingly diverse mix of vegetation—grasses, wildflowers, lichens and hardy dwarf trees. Signs of glacial retreat are clearly visible: once ice-filled valleys now channel milky blue rivers that fan out into small deltas and tidal flats as they meet the fjord. The intention here is to explore by foot, with hiking routes suitable for guests with a range of interests and abilities. Some may choose a faster-paced trek to reach deeper into the wilderness, while others may take their time, pausing to admire the incredible landscape. As in previous outings, the ground will be uneven— rocky in places, with patches of moss and low vegetation.

The route will depend on conditions, but possible destinations include Klosterdalen and Qoorormiut Kangilliit—both known for their dramatic mountain backdrops.

Day 7
Prins Christian Sund & Aappilattoq: Rugged Coastal Wilderness

The epic scenery continues toward Prins Christian Sund, which is synonymous with dynamic ice conditions. This narrow body of water is wedged between steep mountain ranges to the north and south, and it can serve as a corridor for both glacial and sea ice. Intimacy and grandeur apply here, as the narrowest section of the body of water is roughly 400 meters (1,300 feet) across. High above, on both sides of the fjord, are mountain summits that reach between 1,300 (4,200 feet) and 1,700 meters (5,500 feet) above sea level. In other words, these mountains can—and do—rise nearly vertically. You may explore the glacial ice by ship and Zodiac. During the summer glacial runoff, and particularly after rains, this region is home to numerous waterfalls, cascading down seemingly vertical mountain sides. To feel the true scale of nature, you need only sail through Prins Christian Sund. If conditions allow, you may also visit the small village of Aappilattoq, home to fewer than 100 residents. Similar to other coastal Greenlandic communities, this small village is known for colorfully painted homes against a backdrop of cliffs and mountains—and icebergs, which regularly drift by the small community, and are often seen inside the inner harbor. There’s something almost mythical about Aappilattoq, where the inhabitants, many of them fishermen, live alongside drifting icebergs and powerful mountain ranges.

Day 8
Uunartoq: Vibrant Plant Life, Mountains & Icebergs

In summer, the valleys and foothills of Uunartoq Fjord live up to the name Greenland. A region of mountains and stunning geology, Uunartoq also offers a diverse range of plant life. Pockets of grasses, mosses, lichens, and flowering plants, including delicate orchids, grow here, adding splashes of color to this otherwise mountainous, glacial landscape. The hiking routes are stunning, particularly for those fascinated by how plants and wildlife adapt to life in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. You can choose from hikes of varying difficulty—from longer treks with gentle elevation gains to slower, more contemplative walks that allow you to stop and smell the flowers.

The adjacent waters are home to icebergs and marine mammals. Shifting shades of white and glacial blue ice drift with the currents, scattering uniquely shaped ice forms across the landscape. You may spot marine mammals, such as seals and various species of whales. Minke and humpback whales are the most common in Uunartoq Fjord, though you occasionally see fin whales, as well. Uunartoq Fjord is also known for its geothermal hot springs, and depending on conditions, it may be possible to visit some of these natural hot springs during your visit.

Hvalsey: Iconic Norse Ruins

The four walls and foundation of the still standing 14th-century Hvalsey church are considered the most iconic of all Norse ruins in Greenland. For history buffs, this site is akin to a pilgrimage. While you will have encountered Norse ruins earlier in the voyage and visited reconstructions of long-lost villages, Hvalsey evokes a surprisingly complex range of emotions—haunting, reverent, and deeply curious.

Standing almost alone in an otherwise wild landscape, the Hvalsey church prompts one to wonder how civilizations can be forgotten for centuries, and then suddenly remembered. The rolling terrain of this well-chosen site, a mix of rock and vegetation, will appeal to hikers in the group.

"Unforgettable Experience"

I loved this trip exploring South Greenland. We experienced so much in our time aboard and we had great weather during our trip. The scenery was stunning and varied. We spent a lot of time off the ship exploring by zodiac, on foot, paddling, and by helicopter(2x). Exploring by helicopter and making 2 landings in Greenland was an unforgettable experience.

"Breathtaking Surroundings"

I’m 72 and I was looking for an adventure which was different from the usual European trip of visiting endless museums, palaces, churches, etc. I don’t enjoy crowded venues, mobbed by other tourists. Greenland was not a place that every other traveler visits. This expedition gave me the opportunity to hike in places where no one had stepped foot before, in breathtaking surroundings and yet I didn’t have make any arrangements for sleeping accommodations, dining, tours, etc. AdventureSmith and Quark did it all for me, all I had to do is board the ship!

"Absolutely Perfect Trip!!"

We had an absolutely perfect trip!! First class from beginning to end. Loved the helicopter rides and the views we were able to experience from high above Greenland. The ship was fabulous. The room was great. Spacious, considering we were on a ship. It had a large window so we could take in all of the spectacular views. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. We would definitely travel with Quark again.
