5-Day South Itinerary (D)
The 5-day Legend Southern Galapagos Cruise focuses on the southern islands, some of the oldest and most biodiverse in the archipelago, including Floreana, Espanola, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal. Hike, swim, snorkel, kayak and scuba dive (added cost upon availability) among some of the Galapagos Islands’ most unique species.
Arrive to San Cristobal Island and transfer by bus to board the M/V Legend. Receive a warm welcome and introductory briefing from the crew and enjoy a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, make a dry landing in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, capital of the Galapagos Islands. The interpretation center is full of interesting information and offers the perfect overview to the formation of Galapagos, its significance in the world, threats and conservation efforts. Follow this visit with a hike to Frigatebird Hill (Cerro Tijeretas) for great looks at both species of frigatebird, with the bonus of a beautiful view of the bay below.
Begin today at one of the most stunning beaches in all of Galapagos: Gardner Bay. The long, white, sandy beach, lapped by turquoise waters is home to a colony of Galapagos sea lions, indifferent to the humans that walk amongst them. The Hood mockingbirds, endemic to this particular island, will be eager to inspect the visitors and satisfy their innate curiosity. Darwin’s finches may also join the throng including the reclusive warbler finch. One can also snorkel here from the beach, in the shallows of the bay.
Next up: one of the highlight visits of the trip. Punta Suarez seems to have everything—a naturalist’s paradise. A slew of marine iguanas and sea lions greet all at the landing site from where the walk continues with close encounters of boobies, endemic lizards, gulls and even a dramatic blow hole. The oldest extant island in the archipelago, this is the only opportunity to commune with the endemic waved albatross during their breeding season between April and December. With luck, watch their complex courtship display.
A very short walk from the beach leads to the famous Post Office Barrel. Claimed to have been first setup in 1793 by Captain James Colnett, it remains the oldest functioning post office in the Pacific. The system was that whalers and fur sealers would leave addressed letters in the barrel to be picked up by homeward bound colleagues. In the spirit of maintaining tradition, visitors today will often take letters and hand-deliver them in their home countries.
On arriving at Cormorant Point, the observant visitor will notice that olivine, a volcanic crystal, has proffered a subtle green hue on the dark beach. Walk past island-endemic Scalesia plants to a large, shallow lagoon often inhabited by a variable number of shockingly pink greater flamingoes. Continue through a forest of palo santo trees to arrive at a powdery white beach, a nesting area of green turtles. Paddle barefoot in the shallow water to spot diamond stingrays and white-tipped reef sharks.
One of the favorite snorkeling sites in the islands is Devil’s Crown, an eroded volcanic cone home to an abundance of fish and marine animals. Swim with big schools of yellow-tailed surgeonfish, salemas and creolefish and with luck spot turtles, spotted eagle rays, parrotfish and even hammerhead sharks! The jagged crown is a roosting area for boobies, noddies, tropicbirds and frigates.
Champion Islet is a truly magical place to snorkel. Expect to see green turtles, harmless white-tipped reef sharks, an impressive diversity and abundance of fish as well as some playful sea lions often approaching very close, itching to show off their prowess in the water. Champion Islet also happens to be the last remaining home of the island-endemic Floreana mockingbird which one may be lucky enough to see from the pangas.
This morning, arrive to a small lava dock for the day’s first encounters with marine iguanas that blend in perfectly to the dark rock. Walk past large prickly pear cacti and arrive to one end of a long, sickle-shaped beach with Dragon Hill standing in the distance. The walk follows a circular path, past a shallow lake where flamingoes frequently come to feed. Waders such as stilts, turnstones and sandpipers work the muddy edges frenetically looking for food as the walk continues inland to a dry, forested habitat where land iguanas nest and burrow.
In the afternoon feel the indescribable feeling of being were no one else has. Relax on a powdery beach, snorkel around turquoise water islets and hike beside salt pools and dried white corals. Be one of the first -humans- to visit Punta Bowditch.
Make a dry landing on Santa Cruz Island and head to the mountains to admire different kind of birds, such as: tree and ground finches, vermillion flycatchers, paint-billed crakes, yellow warblers, and cattle egrets (usually standing on the tortoises’ shell). The journey to the Highlands Tortoise Reserve offers great opportunities to see the contrasts that the island offers in reference to the variety of ecosystems. The road goes from the coast through the agricultural zone and straight up to the dense humid forests. Often, Galapagos giant tortoises are also seen on the way, wandering through pastures in the paddocks. This spot is a birdwatchers’ haven, since almost every land bird present on the island lives or migrates here. After this visit, say farewell to fellow travelers and transfer to the Baltra Airport for flights back to the mainland.
After the morning’s tour, head to the Baltra Airport for flights back to the mainland.

Flights from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to the Galapagos are not included in the cruise price, but are arranged for you by AdventureSmith Explorations through your ship. Your Adventure Specialist will book these flights for you on the scheduled Galapagos flight for your particular departure. Airfares vary by departure; your Adventure Specialist will detail these for you in their proposal and on your invoice. Activities
There are numerous opportunities to hike, kayak, swim and snorkel. The underwater experience is an integral part of any Galapagos cruise. We encourage all travelers to try snorkeling. Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, floating vest and net bag) are provided. Kayaks are available for rent for a fee. Wetsuits are available, either free of charge or to rent for a fee (see Inclusions and Exclusions), and are recommended from June to December.
For certified SCUBA divers, an optional (added cost) excursion is available by adding a pre- or post-cruise hotel night, or when combining this cruise with another itinerary (for an 8-day cruise), and includes 2 half-day immersions (45-60 minutes), pick up and drop off from cruise ship, transportation to/from dive site, dive equipment, lunch, snack and beverages. PADI license is mandatory. Diving excursions must be booked in advance, based upon availability. Contact your Adventure Specialist for pricing.
Daily excursions from the boat to the islands will be made in pangas (inflatable skiffs). Trip members will hike from the landing point to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours round-trip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are “wet,” requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist.

We strongly recommend that you travel to Galapagos Province with travel insurance that contains medical coverage. Be certain to bring your insurance plan ID documents with you when you travel.
Itinerary Notes
Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion. Due to the active nature of volcanoes in the Western Galapagos, alternate excursions may be offered. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.
5-Day West Itinerary (B)
The 5-day Legend Western Galapagos Cruise visits Baltra, Mosquera Islet, Santiago, Rabida, Isabela, Fernandina and Santa Cruz. The 100-guest Legend is an ideal and family-friendly base from which to hike, swim, snorkel, kayak and scuba dive (added cost upon availability) in the Galapagos Islands.
Arrive to Baltra Island then transfer via a short 10-minute bus ride to board the M/V Galapagos Legend. Receive a warm welcome and introductory briefing from the crew and enjoy a delicious lunch. Spend the afternoon on Mosquera Islet, a tiny, low-lying islet covered in coral sand that is set between North and South Seymour Islands. It is home to a group of sea lions that come to laze on the soft white sand. It is a good spot to observe shorebirds as well as herons, lava gulls and boobies. Snorkeling or diving here, one can often see sharks, rays and barracudas.
The black volcanic sand is what sets apart Egas Port. It is best known for the dramatic shoreline that hosts various species that choose to live between land and sea. Particular among these are the endemic Galapagos fur seals which maintain a small colony at the end of the morning walk. Other species of note include American oystercatchers, sea lions, waders, herons, lava lizards and even Galapagos hawks. Consider an optional visit to an abandoned salt mine famous in its day for supplying salt to mainland Ecuador.
Lying at the heart of the archipelago is Rabida Island with its distinctive red-sand beach. This is home to sea lions, mockingbirds, finches, endemic Galapagos doves and vermillion flycatchers. Walk through a forest of palo santo and cacti to a beautiful overview of the bay. Snorkeling here can be excellent, often with large schools of black-striped salemas, sea lions and the ubiquitous turtles.
At the far end of a long, level hike along Urbina Bay, arrive at a strange phenomenon where large blocks of coral lie completely exposed after a dramatic geological uplift in 1954. At the western base of Alcedo Volcano, hope to run into a few very impressive land iguanas as well as some of the volcano’s endemic Galapagos giant tortoises during the wet season.
After lunch, head to Tagus Cove, a well-known hideout and deep water anchorage in the days of pirates. Tagus Cove was also one of the few sites visited by Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle in 1835. A beautiful hike leads past an overview of Darwin Lake and on to a stunning volcanic landscape revealing Isabela island’s dramatic northern volcanoes. Once back at sea level the perfect activity is to snorkel along a submerged wall with turtles, lots of fish, penguins and potentially flightless cormorants. Possibly even be tempted by a panga ride or kayak!
This morning, visit the youngest island of Galapagos and one of the most pristine in the world. Fernandina is simply the marine iguana capital of the world. This desolate volcanic backdrop is home to a huge concentration of these enigmatic reptiles. Find the diminutive Galapagos penguins incongruously sharing the same shoreline. Also have the exciting opportunity to snorkel with marine iguanas feeding underwater, penguins, turtles and the bizarre, endemic, flightless cormorants.
After lunch, visit the spectacular Vicente Roca Point, surrounded by immense cliffs of the eroded volcano. Find the cliffs studded with resting sea birds such as brown noddies and Nazca boobies, and enjoy them in close proximity from a dinghy. Snorkeling here is superb, with certain species of fish only found in the west of the archipelago. There is also a very real chance of swimming with penguins and potentially a plethora of green turtles.
4-Day Central Itinerary (A)
The 4-day Legend Central Galapagos Cruise begins and ends in Baltra, visits the northern island of Genovesa and the central islands of Santa Cruz and Santa Fe. Enjoy hiking, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving (added cost upon availability) from the 100-guest M/V Legend.
Arrive to Baltra Island and be transferred by a short 10-minute bus ride to board the M/V Legend. Receive a warm welcome and introductory briefing from the crew and enjoy a delicious lunch. After a dry landing, head to the mountains of Galapagos to admire different kinds of birds, such as tree and ground finches, vermillion flycatchers, paint-billed crakes, yellow warblers, and cattle egrets (usually standing on the tortoises’ shell). The journey to the Highlands Tortoise Reserve offers great opportunities to see the contrasts that the island offers in reference to the variety of ecosystems. Often, Galapagos giant tortoises are also seen on the way, wandering through pastures in the paddocks. This spot is a bird watchers’ haven since almost every land bird present on the island lives or migrates here.
Awake in Darwin Bay near Genovesa Island and ride a panga to the far side of the caldera, where red-billed tropicbirds display vociferously overhead while Galapagos fur seals can be seen on the shoreline. Once at the top of the rocky stairway of Prince Philip’s Steps, be met by Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, mockingbirds and finches that line the way through a palo santo forest. Arrive at an expansive open lava field. Wedge-rumped storm petrels swarm above the lava. Keep eyes peeled for short-eared owls.
From within the flooded caldera of Tower Island, in the afternoon set foot onto a sandy beach to be greeted by swallow-tailed gulls often said to be the most beautiful gull in the world. A short, flat trail leads past stands of mangroves and saltbush on which there may be nesting red-footed boobies and great frigatebirds. At the tidal lagoon one may also see the rarest gull in the world, the endemic lava gull.
Sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls and land iguanas are all present at South Plaza Islet. The small island is covered with a carpet of a red succulent studded with Opuntia cacti. At the cliff edge, spend time watching birds fly past at eye level in the up-draught. These include frigatebirds, flocks of Galapagos shearwaters and of particular note, flights of displaying red-billed tropicbirds. Back at sea level, once again encounter land iguanas, some of which have hybridized with their resident marine cousins.
After lunch, enjoy a fabulous snorkel in the turquoise waters of the protected bay, with possible sea lions, turtles, reef sharks and spotted eagle rays. Land onto a sandy beach with abundant sea lions and begin a walk past a forest of island-endemic giant Opuntia cacti. Here, search for another island endemic—the Santa Fe land iguana, paler than its cousins on other islands. Galapagos hawks and even endemic rice rats are also things to look out for.
Named for some wrecked World War II barges whose ribs are still visible in the sand, Bachas Beach offers great swimming, a lovely walk along the shore and a visit to a lagoon behind the high tide line with wading birds, marine iguanas and sometimes even flamingoes. The beach is also a favorite nesting site for green turtles which often leave tractor-like tracks in the sand. After spending the morning at the beach, say farewell to fellow travelers and transfer to the Baltra Airport for flights back to the mainland.

4-Day East Itinerary (C)
The 4-day Legend Eastern Islands Galapagos Cruise begins in Baltra, cruises to North Seymour, Bartolome, South Plaza and San Cristobal islands. Activities include kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, hiking and scuba diving (added cost upon availability).
Arrive to Baltra Island and be transferred by a short 10-minute bus ride to board the M/V Legend. Receive a warm welcome and introductory briefing from the crew and enjoy a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, land on popular North Seymour. This flat, uplifted island is an important spot to see both magnificent and great frigatebird males courting the females by clicking, bill-clapping, shuddering and flapping their wings, all while showing off their grossly inflated, bright red pouch. Hope to see courting blue-footed boobies displaying their unique feet while dancing for a prospective mate. Sea lions, swallow-tailed gulls, crashing surf and distant views of the Daphne Islands top off a great visit.
In the morning, visit Bartolome Island with its iconic view from the top. Overlook the famous Pinnacle Rock and the austere Santiago Island beyond—a view well worth the climb up the wooden boardwalk. This volcanic scene has often been likened to a lunar landscape. A subsequent snorkel here might put swimmers face to face with Galapagos penguins, white-tipped reef sharks and playful sea lions.
In the afternoon, make a wet landing at Sullivan Bay, located at the southeastern portion of Santiago Island and is of important geologic interest. It features extensive relative young pa-hoe-hoe lava flows formed during the last quarter of the 19th century. In the middle of the lava flow, older reddish-yellow colored luff cones appear. Mollugo plants with their yellow-to-orange whorled leaves usually grow out of the fissures. Walking on the solidified lava gives the impression of been in another planet. Tree molds are found, indicating that in that position Large size plants grew in small crevices. until the lava flow of past eruptions burned down the flora of the island.
Be greeted by sea lions at the beach of Punta Pitt and prepare for a climb to a high point on the steep eroded tuff cone. This is the only place in the islands for the chance to see all three of the booby species in the same place. The red-foots will be perched on the Cordia lutea and small trees, the Nazca’s on the ground near the cliff edge and the blue-foots will be a little farther inland. Frigatebirds will be all around and the views are breathtaking.
In the afternoon, visit Cerro Brujo and be humbled by the immensity of the stunning cliffs of Sorcerer’s Hill. Enjoy simply sharing the beach with sea lions, snorkeling from shore or a walk to a hidden lagoon where there may be black-necked stilts, ruddy turnstones, whimbrels and white-cheeked pintails.
In the moist highlands of San Cristobal, visit the giant tortoise breeding center La Galapaguera to witness the most iconic creature of the archipelago in its various life stages. The tortoises wander in a semi-natural habitat which lends itself to good photographic opportunities. The aim of the reserve is to help restore populations of the threatened San Cristobal tortoise back into the wild. In town, there are shops to purchase local handicrafts and souvenirs. After, head to the San Cristobal Airport for flights back to the mainland.
