The Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve is one of Baja’s most beautiful but least explored areas. Part of an island 10 million years ago, the reserve still retains that sense of island isolation. The Biosphere Reserve has an extremely high rate of endemism among its over 875 species of flora and fauna, offering guests opportunities to glimpse wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. The ranchero culture of Baja California Sur is quite distinct, with an egalitarian culture that values skill, hard work, family and hospitality, and on the ranch where this Baja glamping camp is located, those qualities are on full display.

Activities at Camp Cecil de la Sierra

There are many wonderful hikes from Camp Cecil de la Sierra, some that provide dramatic views out to the Pacific Ocean, some to delightful springs and waterfalls for swimming, some that provide a vigorous workout and some that allow for a slower pace to enjoy the plants and birds. Over 430 bird species have been spotted in Baja California Sur, and it is home to six endemic species as well. At Camp Cecil de la Sierra, early morning is generally the best time to get out and connect with the region’s feathered friends. Birders often see a wonderful array of birdlife in the reserve, including the endemic cape pygmy owl, Xantus’s hummingbird and Belding’s yellowthroat. On all outings, be accompanied by a bilingual naturalist guide certified as a Wilderness First Responder and in Leave No Trace ethics.

On site at the ranch, workshops are offered based around guests’ interests, such as leather working and making many food items in the traditional manner including candy, tortillas, tamales and empanadas. A library invites guests to relax among nature. Finally, Camp Cecil de la Sierra is in a completely remote, secluded area of the mountains with no light pollution so the star gazing is sensational.

Dining at Camp Cecil de la Sierra

Sierra Xantus Cafe is centered around a traditional, wood-fired brick stove built in the style favored by Baja California ranching families for generations. Here the hosts cook up amazing meals using fresh produce from the camp’s garden plus regional meats and cheeses provided by local ranching families. Home made tortillas made right on the spot are a staple at all meals. All meals from lunch on the first day through breakfast on the final day are included—daily happy hour too! Consider touring the garden to learn more about what’s harvested plus the camp’s composting and recycling programs.

Camp Cecil de la Sierra features eight beautifully decorated walk-in tents, each 12’x16′ with a real bed, lovely linens, bedside tables, lanterns, towels, yoga mats, fans, storage space, rugs, chairs, rocking chairs and a compost toilet cabaña. Cots are available for additional guests. The headboards, tables, cabinets and rocking chairs are all handcrafted by a local carpenter using regionally sourced wood. Tents can have either one king bed or two twin beds. There is a shared shower cabaña featuring a hotel-quality solar-heated shower with plenty of hot water and good pressure for each guest’s use, as well as a hand washing station.
