Alaska’s Coastal Treasures Cruise
Explore untamed Alaska on an adventurous southcentral route. From the 36-guest Safari Explorer or the 76-guest Wilderness Explorer, paddle, beachcomb, whale watch, take in glaciers and WWI history, and consider adding on fishing in Yakutat.

Embark on a journey crafted for the intrepid traveler, those with a spirit for adventure and a yearning to explore the untamed. Alaska’s Coastal Treasures is not your typical cruise—it’s a voyage for those who crave the thrill of discovery, following in the footsteps of history’s boldest explorers. This expedition takes you through Southcentral and Southeast Alaska, navigating remote waters and secluded bays that few have seen. Flexibility is key on this route, allowing you and the crew to adapt to the whims of weather and tides, just as the great seafarers once did.
The highlights are many along this uncommon route. Visit the historic shores of Kayak Island, where Vitus Bering’s crew first encountered the rugged Alaskan coastline. Cruise the legendary Lituya Bay, known for its challenging entrance and towering mountains. Consider add-on fishing in Yakutat. Experience the raw power of glaciers, witness abundant wildlife and venture into hidden corners that larger vessels can’t reach. Immerse yourself in Alaska’s wild heart, discover its hidden history and be guided by the spirit of exploration that shaped the last frontier.
Sail aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer, or the 76-guest Wilderness Explorer for an intimate Alaska voyage that reaches secluded coves and narrow waterways inaccessible to larger ships. Built for adventure, these vessels pair immersive exploration with exceptional comfort, offering a remarkable three-to-one guest-to-crew ratio, fresh and locally inspired cuisine, expert expedition leaders and naturalists, premium expedition gear, and a wide range of excursions suited to every activity level. Alaska's Coastal Treasures Itinerary
Navigate an adventurous route along this Gulf of Alaska cruise, from Seward to Juneau, for rugged coastline, glaciers, whales, WWII history and more.
After your included transfer from Anchorage, be welcomed aboard in Seward, an historic gateway to Alaska’s coastal treasures. After a safety briefing, enjoy drinks and dinner as the vessel sets sail around 9:00pm. You’ll be taking mostly overnight crossings during this journey, to maximize daylight for exploration and navigating open water while guests are in their rooms.
Wake up in the sheltered Driftwood Bay State Marine Park. Explore the rich coastal landscape with beach walks and guided tours through muskeg meadows. For those eager to get on the water, Kayak 101 will be available to give you some tips and tricks for navigating these waters. This area offers fantastic wildlife sightings, including whales and sea lions.
Today’s destination is flexible between Montague Island and Hinchinbrook Island, allowing adjustments based on weather and vessel traffic. Montague Island’s Zaikof Bay is a great spot for spotting brown bears, while Hinchinbrook offers access to view the historic Cape Hinchinbrook Lighthouse. You can enjoy beachcombing, kayaking, or simply taking in the stunning coastal views.
Kayak Island is a place of deep historical significance, as it was where Vitus Bering’s expedition encountered the now-extinct Steller’s sea cow. Anchoring here can be challenging due to strong currents, but the payoff is worth it. You’ll focus on beachcombing near Pyramid Peak and offer skiff tours if conditions allow. To the north, alternative anchorages near the Martin Islands or Fox Island provide options in case of adverse weather, offering a chance to explore the intertidal zones and possibly hike along the abandoned tracks near the old oil town of Katalla.
Icy Bay requires an overnight crossing, but guests are rewarded with incredible glacier views and a rich marine environment. Spend 2 days exploring the bay, including a close-up look at the Malaspina Glacier and Guyot Glacier, all set against the backdrop of Mount St. Elias in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. This tight bay is surrounded by several glaciers, offering opportunities for hiking, beachcombing and glacier observation.
Disenchantment Bay presents a dynamic glacial landscape, including the impressive Hubbard Glacier, which occasionally blocks Russell Fjord. Witness the power of a glacier actively reshaping the land as you enjoy a day of exploration and glacier calving. Your crew will adjust activities based on conditions to ensure safe and comfortable access.
Yakutat is known for its vibrant fishing culture and remote charm. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the town on walking tours, meet locals, and enjoy optional activities like enjoying world-renowned fishing at an additional cost. This stop allows for a more intimate connection with Alaskan life, situated between the wild coast and dense rainforests.
Lituya Bay is a legendary destination among mariners, known for its dramatic history, including the 1958 mega tsunami. It’s a fair-weather stop due to challenging entrance conditions, but if weather and tides align, the experience is unforgettable. Guests can explore Cenotaph Island, home to black-legged kittiwake colonies and sea lion haul-outs. Enjoy hiking and take in the breathtaking views of the Fairweather Mountain Range. If needed, the crew has alternative options like Graves or Torch Bay, known for their calm waters and stunning scenery.
Step ashore on George Island, home to a World War I-era cannon brought here during World War II. This remote spot offers a blend of history and nature, perfect for a final stretch of exploration before heading toward Juneau. You may also explore nearby areas like Cape Spencer, known for its dramatic marine environment.
Today is all about flexibility, allowing the captain to select the best locations for wildlife viewing. This is a prime opportunity for whale watching in the Inian Islands and Icy Strait, where humpbacks and orcas are frequently sighted. The day’s plan will adjust to the best conditions to ensure you have a memorable experience.
Disembark in Juneau, where your adventure concludes. Reflect on the incredible landscapes, wildlife encounters and rich history experienced along Alaska’s remote coastlines.

The motor yacht Safari Explorer embodies an ambiance of refinement and relaxation, with just 36 guests. Her crew of 14-15 takes care of passengers’ every need. The performance-built Safari Explorer primarily cruises the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska's Inside Passage and is notably one of the few vessels in her well-loved fleet that operates trans-Pacific voyages twice each year, spending the North American summer/fall in Alaska, and the winter/spring in Hawaii.
Why Sail Aboard Safari Explorer
Choose the Safari Explorer if you are seeking a small ship that feels like a yacht. She has upscale appointments and a yacht-like atmosphere but still feels spacious, comfortable and welcoming. Expect as much activity as you wish, with the amenities you would expect from a much larger ship, including windows in every cabin (no portholes). AdventureSmith's founder, Todd Smith, has always called this ship the quintessential expedition ship: "I always say that once you cruise aboard the Safari Explorer, you will be hooked on small ships forever."
She is applauded by our team as being the Goldilocks of small ships; not too big, not too small, but just the right size. She continually receives rave reviews from AdventureSmith Explorations' staff and clients. While the cabins and common areas make for an incredibly comfortable basecamp, it is her service, active itineraries and cuisine that stand out the most.
AdventureSmith Explorations has been aboard the Safari Explorer firsthand, and can help you compare this with other ships offering Alaska small ship cruises, Hawaiian Island cruises, U.S. cruises, Canada cruises and Pacific Northwest cruises. Read our dedicated Safari Explorer Ship Review written by one of our specialists, or consult this page further for a detailed description of the vessel, including ship specs, deck plan, cabin images, photo gallery and current links to all Safari Explorer cruise itineraries, dates and rates.
Common Areas Aboard Safari Explorer
Aboard the yacht, three public decks provide plenty of room for mingling, relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. The salon and lounge provide an inviting space with warm wood accents to be educated by lectures on the environment, wildlife, history and culture of the region. A TV screen drops down from the ceiling to provide visual accompaniment. Local experts are often invited along as special guests to "talk story" and provide insights unavailable to most other visitors. On select departures, onboard expert naturalists and guides are complemented by guest hosts in the fields of ornithology, photography, marine biology, wine and wellness, among others.
Musical instruments, guidebooks and games like mancala further encourage interaction. Large couches and a piano adorn the lounge, adjacent to a full-service bar staffed by a few rotating bartenders. A modest gear and merchandise store is available, as well as a public wash closet on the the aft of the Main Deck interior.
The Bridge Deck features five lounge chairs, four sets of tables and chairs, and abundant space to spread out to embrace the Hawaiian sun or brisk air in Alaska. A separate shaded seating area with table and patio furniture has additional seating for six. This is also where guests can take advantage of the ship's open bridge policy, offering opportunities to chat with the officers and crew and spot marine life from their perch. Please note: Safari Explorer is equipped with limited internet connectivity, to encourage the opportunity to disconnect. Cell phone reception may be available when the ship is in more populated areas; a satellite phone is available (added cost) for emergencies.

Elegant plated dinners offer a choice of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats; a split plate is even available for indecisive eaters. Desserts are plentiful, imaginative combinations of tarts, pies, cakes and mousses.

Activities Aboard Safari Explorer
Active adventure cruises aboard the Safari Explorer allow freedom to engage in many activities. Two rigid-frame inflatable skiffs operate excursions from this vessel, with each able to hold half the guests aboard along with a few members of the crew. In Alaska, skiffs are primarily used for remote shore landings, and for scenic wildlife cruising. In Hawaii, skiffs are used for accessing marinas throughout the itinerary, and for snorkeling.
A full-beam swim step makes for easy access to the water or kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) from the stern of the vessel. The vessel carries a quiver of kayaks and SUPS, which can be used for guided outings (kayaks only) or open paddle/swim events. Important to note that different kayaks are used depending on where you cruise. In Alaska, sit-inside double kayaks are used, and in Hawaii sit-on-top kayaks are used. Also in Hawaii, the vessel will provide a dedicated snorkel set (mask, snorkel, fins) for use throughout your voyage. You can conveniently store this equipment in the cabin-assigned lockers on the back deck.
There is no guided wellness program offered onboard, but guests can find fitness equipment on the Bridge Deck in the form of weights, benches, elliptical, spin bike, yoga mats and blocks for self-use. A hot tub on the Bridge Deck is filled for cooler-weather Alaska itineraries, and the ship features a mechanized swimsuit dryer for frequent use in Hawaii and hot tub and polar plunge enthusiasts in Alaska. Other features are hiking poles for use and hydrophones for listening to below-surface sounds.
